  1. I kinda agree with msdarjeeling...I consider myself to be multi-racial as opposed to biracial, despite the fact that my mother identifies as white (she is half Japanese) and my father identified as black (he was about a quarter native American) so I check all that apply. The only thing that irks me is when forms disallow multi selections, don't provide a multi-racial option and only give an alternative choice of 'other'. To me, other implies something outside the normal...I never answer the question when its like this. Im proud to say what I identify as...but 'other' does not accomplish this.
  2. I almost didn't want to post, because I love Arcadian's last post sooooo much...but To all those saying that 'best' is an incomplete thought...then so is using 'regards' or 'sincerely' (both of these incomplete thoughts could be read as, regards to your mother, sincerely didn't read your last email) They're just words. Contextually and socially, we place enough meaning in singular words to understand a complete thought. Using a single word is often an incomplete thought if you completely ignore everything that came before it. All I'm saying is that this logic isn't reasonable to object 'best'
  3. It's possible to get a funded MA, but it's more likely that you'll need loans, or you could perhaps go part time do that you can work at the same time. For a research based Phd, you would try for funding which could/would cover tuition, fees, insurance, and/or stipends which means you wouldn't work. They don't typically want you to work (other than TA or other related positions) because you should be spending all your time academic-ing up.
  4. I graduated before I applied, so naturally all my grades came into play...but I know that often times acceptances are conditional upon receipt of final transcripts if you haven't yet completed your degree.
  5. I just started clicking around this website and found this line in the "China Students" section and yes, that typo in the begining is part of the original text. "It is widely know to US admissions committees that LORs are for the most part written by students, and then given to the professor to sign. This is problematic, because it meas the admissions committee cannot count on the LOR to be provide an “independent” evaluation of the student’s abilities." This was NOT my experience at all and I haven't met any applying student that has admitted to such a thing. All my letter writers took letter writing seriously. In fact, if they had asked me to do this, I think I would have just found another writer. I've learned from multiple people that they later learned that rejections were sometime strongly influenced by poor letters of recommendation...so I think adcoms DO take them seriously. I'm not sure if this advice suggests that only Chinese applicants do this or that all applicants do...but either way...seems like odd to me.
  6. Thanks for the clarification! So unfortunately this is outside my field of knowledge/experience, and so don't have many tips, but I have some questions that might help. When are you applying? (sorry if this is in your signature info, Im on my phone and can't see it lol) Also, are you applying for an ma or phd? Do you have a strong writing sample? If not, do you have time to edit/write one? And if course, have you taken the gre? As you've probably read, high scores won't necessarily get you in, but low ones might garner an early cut. That's all I got...hope its a little helpful...and Im sure more will comment. It might help to look through the English threads too :-D
  7. I was just curious what your bs is in and what field you're looking at for grad school? Did I miss this info?
  8. Most of the schools I applied did not require official transcripts unless I was admitted. I still had to send unofficial copies by the application deadlines.
  9. I'm one of those people that prefer to comment face-to-face rather than via fb. This is especially true when I see the person on a regular basis. If one of my fb friends posts a picture or a comment and I have something to say about, I typically tell them the next time I see them, or even give them a call/text...and therefore never put it in written form on FB. This isn't because I don't like fb, because I do. It's more that I think things on fb often seem disingenuous (even tho I realize that's not often the case.) Take wishes of happy birthday for instance. I actually find it somewhat annoying when people tell me happy birthday on fb, because I feel that they only know it's my bd because fb told them...which is fine since it's difficult to keep track of so many birthdays...there's one everyday! But I would be more flattered if they called/text/emailed...because that takes slightly more effort; especially since quite a few people spend quite a bit of time on the site already -read, me on gradcafe lol I don't think I've told my friends what I've written here, so maybe they do think I'm weird when I talk to them in person when I could have very well just posted it to social media for them to read...but I don't really care if they do...( I am kinda weird lol) But if they did, I wouldn't mind them telling me so. And to address that this person doesn't post much about themselves...that's cool too. I don't post that much either...The last thing I posted was in May about my car battery being dead...lol My friends typically just call/text when they wanna know what's up or better yet, I call them up and we have a good old fashioned conversation. There may be a some kind of cultural gap between you and said lurker...so they may think it's more polite to speak to you in person as has been mentioned...or maybe they just don't want to leave a big technology footprint...or maybe he/she is a secret spy... Also, if you feel that he is being weird or creepy, just block her/him and they they wont be able to talk to you about your fb things in real life unless you bring it up in conversation yourself.
  10. Im not in your field but here's my two sense based on what I've read around gc. It's hard to say how competitive you are given how many variables exist. Like how good your sop is or how supportive/glowing your LORs are. It also depends on the incoming class and how you fit within the dept. It sounds to me (as a none-math person) as if you have good potential to put together a strong application. But if you want more specific advice my guess is that you'll need to divulge more about yourself...
