  1. I called Hunter's financial aid office today and asked about my loan eligibility, and they told me over the phone. Don't e-mail them, call them and you should be set. The woman I spoke to was very helpful! Don't call the School of Social Work, call Hunter's financial aid office.
  2. Columbia offered me $1000 more per year for appealing for more money. It's still too expensive, so I'm going to have to turn down their offer. Y'all should try asking for more money!
  3. I just e-mailed Hunter and they said I would have to wait until I registered for classes to tell me my aid (for the governmental loan). I responded by telling her that I need to know if I could afford tuition before attending. This is really counterintuitive!
  4. I asked columbia for more money, despite the 7,000/yr scholarship. I said that I could not afford the tuition, despite the generous scholarship. My case is under review.
  5. Hunter doesn't offer scholarships upon admission; instead, you can fill out their scholarship form and apply for outside scholarships. They haven't given me an invoice. Instead, they directed me to the website, which lists tuition. I think all grad students are offered a $20,500 governmental loan per year.
  6. Requesting a Skype interview is totally fine. I had a Skype interview because I was abroad. I was accepted last week and am submitting my deposit this week!
  7. Hi All! I just got my financial aid from Columbia, and everything would be covered (including living expenses) with my financial aid package, which includes a grad plus loan and a stafford loan. They only gave me a $7,000/yr scholarship. The only reason I would go to Columbia would be for the name, which I don't think is a good enough decision factor. I hear the program is excellent, but really big with somewhat large class sizes. While Columbia it is internationally recognized as being an amazing university, within NYC Hunter is looked at on the same level of prestige for social work, if not higher. I also got into Yeshiva University with a scholarship that would cover the cost of tuition in combination with the Stafford Loan. I get the feeling Yeshiva offers an amazing education with small class sizes, but I'm afraid people would think I'm really religious with a degree from there, besides it being a secular program. What do people think? I was interviewed for Hunter's program by a woman who got her MSW from Columbia because she was rejected from Hunter. The tuition at Hunter is extremely affordable, and I would rather go to a school that makes itself accessible for people of all financial backgrounds. I really hope I get in! I should find out within 2-4 weeks. I just thought I'd give my own personal insight to see what others think. I want to open a private practice one day, and am not too sure how the school name would factor into my ability to get a nice client base or position at an organization. I like to think that good people get good jobs, not good schools. And I think Hunter offers competitive field placements. I hope everyone is managing well with the whole waiting game!!
  8. I just got into Columbia too! They didn't mention any aid, but I think information will be sent out after they receive the FAFSA. When I called and asked about scholarships, they basically said that they don't give much aid, so I probably won't be going, but it's still exciting to get in!
  9. I was accepted into Yeshiva University's program with a $9000/year scholarship!
  10. Hi All! I am applying to Hunter, NYU, Columbia and Yeshiva. I went to Hunter, Yeshiva and Columbia today to hand in my transcripts. Hunter and Columbia said that the personal statement counts for about 80% of their decision. Of course, looking back I submitted an essay to Yeshiva with a grammatical error. oh well! My GPA is a 3.75. Thankfully I did not have to take the GREs. I interned for the Office of Children, Youth and Families for four months, and did HIV research for about a year. I'm also an RA at my undergraduate institution. From what I hear, Yeshiva gives out good scholarships. Columbia said that they only have need-based aid, but it seems like that only entails governmental aid. NYU is known for their scholarships, but compared to the tuition, it's minimal. Hunter is my top choice. They have a reputation for being slow with paperwork and not answering the phones, but they have a very well-respected program. I believe they have the most competitive program in NYC.
