  1. I haven't decided yet, I just got funding from both so they gave me two extra days to decide...
  2. Would you choose a great program but far from your spouse (requiring a flight) OR A good-ish program that is much closer to him/her (driveable in a couple of hours)? I am afraid to take the latter over the former, but I really want to... But what if I regret it and can't find a job in 5 years?? Ahhh!!!
  3. For what it's worth, I am in history and about to finish my M.A. - after 4 semesters, I have never had a female professor in grad school... I do know, however, that there are a couple female professors in my department - I just haven't had either of them for a class. And as far as students, my department is about 3:1 male. I was surprised at first, but not anymore. Maybe it's just my department, or maybe it's the field of graduate-level history? I don't know...
  4. Nebraska and Arizona. Both have faculty strong in history of the American West (but as an overall department, my understanding is that UW is higher ranked)... I will definitely talk to my professors and see what they say, though none specialize in this area of history.
  5. Yes, it sounded like it's possible - students apparently compete for TAships (and other funding?) each Spring semester for the following year. I already have hefty loans from an M.A. though, so money is a really important factor here. I just can't decide if the program justifies the extra cost or not!
  6. I just got home from being out of town last week and found a letter of admission from UW in my mailbox... but no funding the first year. Would/is anyone considering going to UW unfunded, or is this crazy? It is among my top choices, so it's now in the running against a lesser ranked school which has offered me a fully funded spot. I was leaning towards that school until now, I am wondering if I should at least consider the merits of having a PhD from UW? My specialty is Western history, especially of the 19th century... any thoughts? Please share any knowledge about UW that you can, I's really appreciate it! Thanks!
  7. Pjizz - Congratulations! I also got an e-mail awhile ago, stating I was being offered admission but no funding yet. I was ecstatic for a second, but then I realized crap, I can't go if I don't get funding! I wonder how far down the list we are for $$$? I asked the Grad Director, but she hasn't answered. I have fully funded offers at three other schools - but as much as I love one of the programs in particular, I still wonder whether the Boulder name might help me have a better chance at a TT job later on? I'm in American history, with an interest in the West. Any thoughts?
  8. I'll be out of town next week too... in Denver! That's why I want to know so much before I go, so I can go visit *just in case* I happen to get in Good luck to you!
  9. Okay, I really am trying SO hard to be patient, but...has anyone heard from Boulder yet?
  10. Yeah, for ancient history I'd think that would definitely be the history department. Hmm...probably doesn't bode well for me if he/she heard last week, and I haven't heard yet. On another note, I actually heard back from Oregon today, though, via the mail - rejected. I'll keep my fingers crossed and see about Boulder. Thanks!
  11. I'll try searching the archives. Sounds like I just need to be patient for a couple more weeks though, huh? Thanks for the responses! And good luck to both of you.
  12. Is anyone else applying to public universities in the western U.S. (other than the UC's or Stanford)? I have heard from about half of the schools to which I applied, but I am still antsy to hear news from the rest... It looks like it may still be too soon to hear from UW Seattle, but has anyone heard from CU Boulder or University of Oregon, specifically? I just want to know all of my options before I get too attached to a particular program. But right now, it looks like I'll have to choose EITHER the program OR the desirable location, but not get both. Anyone else? This is tough...
  13. WUSTL is apparently updating their website, as I just received my rejection there when I logged on to check. I didn't even really expect it to be updated, since I've been checking now for 2 weeks. I know it's only one school, but it's hard when a rejection is the first news one hears! Better luck to everyone else!
  14. I just got my first response... rejected from history at UC Davis. Suddenly I'm not so excited to check the rest of the websites now.
