  1. My last day is June 13th. cannot. ****ing. wait.
  2. Nicee! super pumped theres a thread for this school, Im going to UWO for fall!! Starting to look at places to stay cant decide on a bachelor apartment or to go the roommate way. Was thinking bachelor because I dont know anyone and have never been thereeeeeeeeee womp wompp But the housing seems reasonable? the res is crazy pricy but in town doesnt seem too bad?
  3. So, I have been doing research with a prof for the last 2 years of my undergrad, back in January she said if I wanted she would be happy to have me as a grad student the following fall. I said that would be great but i still wanted to apply elsewhere. I applied and she wrote my references and all that. Anyway, then she left to go on sabbatical and told me she wanted to know by the end of MARCH if I was going to stay with her or not. So obviously I had no choice since I hadnt heard back from anywhere but to accept. ANNDD as you can imagine as the months trickled by I started to get responses from schools.. a few rejections and then on my last hope from the one school out of them all I realllyyy wanted to get into an offer came. YAYY. but not yay at the same time.... Obviously I had to tell her I would be leaving after ALREADY telling her I would be working for her for the next few years. Anyway, Im just coming back from her office sitting in my lab chair feeling really depressed after telling her, she was okay, obviously disappointed with me but she knows its a good opportunity. So here I am feeling like a bum looking for condolence from you guys... weh
  4. Im trying to get an idea of how much money grad school will cost me per year. With a stipend ~15,000$ and rent on an apartment ~600/month that would leave about 7800$ (approximately I know the numbers wouldnt work out that well) for other necessities. So Im wondering, is it possible to get through and entire year on your stipend? Taking into account; food, transportation, school supplies etc.. it seems reasonable to do because eight thousand dollars should be enough for an entire years worth of food and travel, what do you guys think? Ive never done this before obviously...
  5. I was notified recently that a supervisor at my top choice school would like to interview me and since the school is in another province they requested to do it via skype. I feel like this will be kinda awkward...has anyone done this before? Whats it like? I really want to nail it and get the position, what kind of formalities/informalities apply to this kind of interview??
  6. I posted a little while back about accepting an offer from a supervisor from a safety school when I thought all hope was lost for the others I applied to. Well the supervisor didnt give me a very reasonable time frame, said they needed to know my March, and of course I hadnt heard from anywhere by then so I had no choice to accept. I did get rejected from two of the four I applied to but recently was emailed by a PI at the one school out of them all I thought was a long shot (super pumped!), anyway not that anything is set in stone but of course I will want to go there if there is a possibility Im worried that if an offer comes I will have to bail on my current PI who Ive already told I would work with, and started summer research and everything!! Will they understand that I really believe its the best option career-wise for me? ORRR will it be a HUGE deal and; -I lose my summer research job -they email the PI at the other school who Id be working with and tell them what Ive done...ie, tell them nothing but bad things about me -Both schools just flat out hate me........and I have nowhere to go Kind of anxious about this.....ugh
  7. Hey guys, I know that title is very urgent sounding but its just because Im stressed about the decision I need to make. So I applied to several schools for M.Sc. programs, four exactly, one that i did my undergrad at and three others I was interested in. I had already had a supervisor lined up at my home school but the other three were a shot in the dark, I chose each of them for a different reason (like the province, academic reputation etc..) Anyway my supervisor put a time crunch on me to decide if I wanted to stay here or pursue elsewhere back in MARCH and said they needed to know by the end of that month. Obviously I hadnt heard from anywhere then so I had to take the offer my supervisor offered me. And anyway replies came back, rejected from one, and the other two were still in the process of cycling applications to faculty. But just today I received an email from the one school out of all them that I considered a long shot asking me if I had accepted an offer anywhere else............and that they offer me a conditional offer, provided that supervisors need students. And I was recently in touch with the admissions officer and they said theres plenty of faculty who want grad students. So my problem is, Ive pretty much confirmed I would work with the supervisor at the school im at now, but that conditional offer kind of changed alot of things. I always assumed id pursue grad school elsewhere and I think it would be beneficial for me to go somewhere else too. BUT I cant even begin to think how horrible I would feel if I bailed on my current supervisor at this point. Do you think they would understand or just flat out hate me........ I feel like whatever i decide I need to do it soon because my "current" supervisor is already thinking up a research project for me...............
  8. haha grapefruit sitting in your moms basement playing world of warcraft again...arent you?
  9. Hey guys, just wondering what a typical stipend is for a first year MSc student? I just graduated and entering into my program in September Im not sure whats considered a "good" stipend, I would assume anything that is sufficient enough to cover tuition is good. Unfortunatley I wasnt forward thinking enough to apply for external funding so Ill be living on my stipend I would say!
  10. I was rocking a 3.0 my last year of undergrad, luckily back in my second year I approached one of my profs and asked if they needed any extra lab work done because I was interested in it and wanted to get involved. So I started working for her part time, then full time the summer of my third year. Then in fall of my last year of ugrad she asked me what my plans were for after I graduated, I told her how I would like to do grad school but figured my dismal average would weigh me down. She said that shed be glad to have me work for her because she knew my academic average wasnt a "real" indication of how I could work! Starting with her now this week and super pumped. So it just goes to show not all supervisors base everything on marks. Ended up getting my gpa up just above a 3.0 but had my acceptance before I graduated. having below a 3.0 doesnt mean you cant get into grad school! Dont be discouragedddd!!!!!!!!!!
  11. Im starting my MSc work this week coming and the first thing my supervisor is starting me working on is an application/proposal for an internship. I really have no idea where to start...kind of worried really....eek
  12. Hey guys, Recently I was accepted to do my masters at the same university I did my BSc at. The prof is the same who Ive been working with for ~2 years, and the funding package is great. I hear from alot of people its kind of "looked down upon" to do grad school at the same place where you did your undergrad. My thoughts are different, I thought it would be good for me to stick around here and get this perspective on research before heading elsewhere in a few years to pursue a Phd. For me, I think its a really good fit, Im comfortable where Im living, I like the project and like I mentioned, financially its the best option. Do you guys think this will look bad for me in the future? I know obviously too many degrees from the same place wouldnt be beneficial, and I am not going to want to stay here for Phd work.... Anyway what do you guys think, should I jump at offers from other schools?????
  13. Hey guys, I have a few questions about funding with concerns to my MSc program. I know that my stipend from my school is ~17k, but my supervisor recently told me that she would like me to also be part of an internship with MITACS. Which I am totally game for. However I noticed in the little package she gave me that MITACS also has a 10k stipend with it. Does this mean that this would add onto the stipend from my university?? Im really not sure, and Im also kind of edgy about asking my supervisor and industrial partner who we're working with, because it really makes no difference Ill be glad to work with them regardless! Im wondering this not because Im overly concerned with getting paid alot or anything, because Im glad to be working with this particular supervisor and its a great opportunity, but because Im looking into paying my student loans and housing costs and all that. Trying to get things sorted out for September!! please let me know if you guys have any input!
  14. Hey guys I recently got an offer from the university I did my undergrad at to continue on into an MSc but of course I applied elsewhere and would reallyyyy rather attend the other school but I havent heard anything from them yet. The school I got an offer from has me on a time crunch too so what do I do? email the other school and tell them this orrrrrrrrrrrrrrr wait it out..for the week and a half I have haha ohh nooooooooooo
  15. dude totally not alone most frustrating period of my life haah. at the beginning of every week I tell myself "yeah things will happen this week" and next thing I know its Friday afternoon and not single email or letter. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
