Have you rejected the rest of the schools that accepted you? I'm not sure how to politely reject them. Will they feel offended?

I don't think they will feel offended if you turn down their offer, in fact the sooner you tell them the better. I am sure they have a bunch of people on the wait-list waiting for your spot.

It does feel good to be decided, although now I can't wait for it to be september!

I'll probably be doing grad housing. I just don't think I'd be able to find a place off campus that I'd be happy with without having a bit of time to do it in person. Besides, rent's so cheap and it's right there...

Has anybody's email been activated? They said it would be 24 hours after responding to the offer, but I haven't seen anything.

Yes my e-mail is active. I was able to use it approx. 24 hours after I accepted the offer in axess, as they say. You should be able to login here: http://webmail.stanford.edu with your SU Net ID and password.

Hi! I just accepted an offer from the History Department (the rare Stanford fuzzy). I went there as an undergrad and am definitely over on-campus housing, so I'll be looking for an apartment.

If anyone wants advice about housing or Palo Alto, PM me. All housing at Stanford is not equal, and you can definitely end up living in a common room as a grad student if you're not careful. Or if you get a bad draw number.

Anybody looking to share a place off campus? Close by though, since I don't have a car.

Hi! Just accepted my offer-- I'll be in the PhD program at the School of Education.

My husband and I will be looking for off-campus housing... we're willing to live up to a half hour away biking (we don't have a car), ideally along the Caltrain line. Any advice on neighboring communities that students choose to live in?

Hey- I likely will be joining you all in the fall (Anthropology). I was considering on-campus housing, but now I'm questioning it! Mehist10, can you give us the housing rundown as you see it? I visited a few of the units when I was there a couple weeks ago and they looked passable (I live in a graduate student dormitory now. An actual dormitory, not an apartment style complex, so maybe my standards have fallen). Curious about your perspective. Thanks so much! 5 more months until sunshine!

Your best option may be Menlo Park close to Caltrain. There is a bike bridge that makes it relatively convenient to bike to campus from there.

Mountain View may also be doable for you. You could probably make it in a half hour biking. It's to the south of Palo Alto and campus is in the north part of Palo Alto so it would be a little farther, but depending where in Mountain View you find a place, it could work.

Or, of course, if you can find an apartment in Palo Alto, that would certainly be bikable. Palo Alto is not as apartment-friendly in general, though -- meaning there are better values in Menlo Park and Mountain View. But you can find good apartments in Palo Alto, too. Downtown would be the most convenient to Caltrain -- there is also a Caltrain stop on California Ave but fewer trains stop there.

Regarding Caltrain, note that as a student you aren't eligible to get a free access pass (though faculty and staff are -- this might apply to your husband?). So if you plan to take Caltrain as part of your commute, know that it will be fairly expensive to do so.

Good luck! Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Where else did you apply/get into, if I may ask?

I applied to Berkeley, Princeton, Columbia, UCSD and NYU. I got rejected from the first two, got into the second two and still haven't heard from the last. I applied for Security .. how about you?

I'm going for an M.A. in East Asian Studies. I think I'll definitely be living in grad student housing as I'll be driving from Massachusetts - EEK! Anyone else making the 3,000 mile life voyage?

Yes! Driving from Georgia. Hope my car makes it...

About 95% sure Stanford is my final choice. Will be going for a Biophysics PhD.

From SoCal so the move will be a welcome change (even though I will miss my constant sunshine). I am considering living in on campus housing my first year and later on moving to SF. My boyfriend would likely be moving to SF (the sunset district) around the same time I would get to Palo Alto this summer, which makes it extra convenient!

Anybody hear about a service where you can meet your potential roommate for on campus housing? I'm a pretty private person, and wanna get to know someone before I'll be moving in with them. I've heard some horror stories..

I'd have to say the EV 2bedroom townhouses would probably be my first choice. Wish I could afford Munger, but it seems to be more to be law school types anyways. What seems to be the most social? I don't wanna spend more than about $1k a month. I considered the EV studios, but they seem so much smaller for the price compared to the townhouses.

Any idea if the 2 bedroom townhouse's in EV can fit a queen bed?

One thing I've heard (and seen, from the outside at least) is that the EV studios are much nicer building-wise than the low-rises. They were built more recently and are, well, nicer and newer.

Also, as far as the bed, the only unfurnished places are couples and family housing. If you want to put your own furniture in a furnished place, I think you have to find and pay for storage for the Stanford-owned furniture! Logical, but not what it was like in my undergrad dorms. Anyway you can look at floorplans and stuff for EV here, but they don't have room dimensions or anything: http://www.stanford....grad/ev_low.htm
