Yeah, I'll be starting a maths PhD in August.

Have you visited the campus? I've never been there and I've had a quick search for people's opinions, and I've seen everything from "shiny, modern and awesome" to "it's a huge pile of crap".

I've visited the campus, and I wouldn't call it gorgeous (lots of buildings that were clearly built in the '60s and '70s), but the central part of campus, where most of the academic buildings are located, has nice tree-lined walkways, benches everywhere, and places for students to stop and grab some food. I'm guessing it's really nice there when the weather's warm.

The current grad students I spoke with told me that living off-campus is definitely a better option. Stony Brook has a very good off-campus housing website: http://och.fsa.sunysb.edu/. Hope that helps!

I am an English PhD and I will likely be there this fall... I definitely need to find some off campus housing because I am moving from Colorado with my dog :) Maybe when time gets closer we can try to plan on catching up!

Excellent, thanks! I thought I'd go for on-campus to start with, just to make the move a bit easier, but I'll be moving out ASAP. Can't wait :)

No problem!

And yeah, not such a fan of the carpet thing! I think I'd prefer even fake wood floors over carpeting, but living off a TA salary, I guess I can't be too picky! :( I'm mainly looking for a house or apartment shared by grad students; there seem to be quite a few options. Definitely don't want to just rent a room from somebody; I'd feel a bit weird living in someone else's house, like I was a guest or something.

There are some nice towns in the area; ideally I'd like to live in or close to Port Jefferson village, so I'll see how it goes. Craigslist also has some listings for rooms in houses shared by Stony Brook students. (http://longisland.craigslist.org/)

I've been coming through the CL listings every day until my eyes bleed! A tip--there's also a Long Island section of the NYC Craigslist which seems to be a different board. I'm not sure why they duplicated like that. Newsday is also really good, as are a lot of brokerage sites, though I'd really, really like to avoid a broker's fee. I am married and coming solo for the first year until we can move my husband out, so I'm looking for a studio/1 BR but really trying to avoid a share at this point. I am also trying to live in PJ/Village. I am going to try to do this without a car for most or all of the first year, so I'd like to be close by but also among a more concentrated population!

Hello all,

Attending Stony Brook for a PhD in Music Composition this fall. My wife and I are moving from Omaha, NE.

What brokerage sites are people using?

I am currently using http://www.padmapper.com for CL

and http://www.mlsli.com/

My main concern right now is finding a job! How is everyone else (non TA) handling this?
