spanish/romance languages

I also applied to spanish/romance language departments but haven't heard a word from any of them.

I applied to:

NYU in Madrid (M.A. Spanish)

UPenn (PhD. Romance Languages)

University of Delaware (Dual M.A. Spanish/French)

Pending whether I get acccepted to any of those, I am going to apply to a couple of the safety schools I had lined up with insanely late deadlines (WCU, SLU in Madrid). At Penn, the DGS told me that I would hear back in early March, UDel said mid-late March (their Spring semester only just started on Feb 11), and NYU's website says that decisions are mailed out in mid-late March. I only applied to a few because I was only interested in going to those schools/programs, at least for this cycle. If I don't get in I think I'd rather find a job translating than going to one of my safety schools, but we'll see.

Where did you apply/what are your research interests?

Hi all (um, all 2 of you),

I know I'm a little late to this topic, but I was wondering if anyone had applied to/heard anything from Penn...that's the last school I'm waiting on and I'd sort of like to know one way or the other...thanks and best of luck to everyone!

No word from Penn yet, though the DGS told me to expect a reply in early March, which I would imagine means we'll hear something either this week or next. Good luck!

Where else did you apply/get accepted? I just got an informal acceptance via e-mail yesterday from NYU for the Spanish & Portuguese MA in Madrid, I was pretty thrilled! More info coming in the mail in the next few weeks. Aside from Penn I'm waiting on a dual MA in Spanish & French at UDel.

Congrats on your acceptance and thanks for the info! I also applied and was accepted to the PhD program at U. Virginia...I asked about Penn because I know for a fact that they already had their prospective student weekend last month....so I'm pretty positive what my answer from them will be, but I thought it was worth a try!

Do you know for sure that the Hispanic Studies prospective weekend has already happened? I know that the French people I talked to got their notices and invites, but they'd said that the e-mail was from the French Group (not the Romance Languages dept as a whole). It'd be unfortunate if rejected but I've recently been thinking that the MA route first would make the most sense for me. Keep me posted, if rejections are awaiting us I'd imagine they'd wanna get it done this week! haha

If we are rejected though, I wonder why the DGS didn't just tell me when I e-mailed her last. All she said was "you will be notified of the committee's decision in early March!" Haha, it'd be a bit cruel if she said that, exclamation and all, if she knew I was rejected...haha especially since I've kept close correspondence with her through the entire process(what w/ issues regarding foreign transcripts being late, etc.). Thanks for the info and congrats also on your acceptance!

What are your research interests?

Haha, yeah, that would be really cruel, especially with the exclamation...if that were the case, I don't know why she wouldn't just tell you...or at least try not to sound so upbeat! To answer your question, I was speaking with a friend of a friend who also applied to Spanish/Romance Languages at Penn, and, upon hearing that I had as well, asked me if I was going to the prospective student weekend the following week...

Believe me, for our sake, I would much rather be wrong! Now you've got me hoping I misheard. I've got to say though, Madrid sounds a lot more appealing than Phildelphia, great program or not...I guess it depends on what you're interested in studying- I'm leaning towards Golden Age lit but I'm not 100% certain.

Golden Age lit was my fave. I wrote a huge paper on the picaresque novel comparing Lazarillo de Tormes and Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man. Good luck!

I'm mostly interested in Medieval and Golden Age (particularly mysticism), as well as Spanish Humanism in the Renaissance in particular. Another research interest of mine is the influence of the literatura vanguardista (Cortazar, Borges) on Hispanic Cinema.

Lazarillo de Tormes is definitely a good one!

just got Penn rejection - it's certainly much easier to be rejected when you already know you've been accepted somewhere! just waiting on UDelaware now, at least I'm finally figuring out where I'm gonna go now, the waiting was terrible

Please explain to me the difference between romance novels and porn? I know that many women read romance novels, and many men look at porn. I don't see men on here asking to get their wives off of the literary sex, so I was wondering: is there a difference to you? Thanks in advance! Oh, just as an aside, I in my house, we don't care for romance novels or porn, so this is purely out of curiosity.
