NSERC 2012-2013

I seem to recall them e-mailing me about the next step, which involved uploading reference letters and putting in the designated contact for transcripts. It will take them a couple weeks to sort through all the applicants anyways, because the departments have to rank you then the faculty of graduate studies will probably look through all the ones forwarded on to them.

I was wondering about this as well. I'm confused, because my reference letters were already uploaded along with my transcripts.

for some reason I thought that the university forwarded the applications they selected by the time of the deadline for people applying directly to nserc (in this case, Oct 15), but I guess that is not correct(?)

No that is not correct. The universities have their own deadlines separate from the direct deadline. For example, my department has to submit their ranked applicants to the School of Graduate Studies by this Friday, so their internal deadline was 2 weeks prior

I heard last week that mine was forwarded on to Ottawa. Hopefully third time's a charm, not getting my hopes up because I was told I was ranked high within the university last 2 years and didn't get it.

I am yet to hear anything from my school but when I check my NSERC online account, it shows the status as "Received".

What does it mean? Do you have the same status when you say that your application has been forwarded from your school?

I'm not sure why it took so long, but I received notice that my application was forwarded to NSERC last week.

Last year my application didn't make this step, so I'm pretty happy about it. I'm curious though - how many applications do the schools send to NSERC? Are there any numbers out there?

Thanks!

I'm not sure about numbers that have been sent from your particular university, but NSERC makes public the list of people who were actually successful in being funded (which includes the name of their uni's and the titles of their work): http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Disclosure-Divulgation/grants-Subventions_eng.asp

I just received an email from NSERC stating that my PGS/CGS-D application was removed from the contest, owing to it not being sufficiently within their mandate. They suggested applying to CIHR instead. Obviously I disagree with this, if I had thought it appropriate for CIHR I would have just sent it there in the first place (and it was a fairly strong application if I do say so myself). Anyhow, is there any way I can find out their rationale for this? Perhaps a copy of the reviewer's remarks or something of that sort? Do I have any recourse, or should I just try again next year?

I'm sorry to hear that. If you search around the NSERC site there are routes for making appeals, although I'm not sure how difficult it is to actually get them to review your appeal/application. You can get comments for the Discovery grants, but maybe you can check around with the PGS comments too.

Good luck!

Try this if you are interested in PGS/CGS, try these links. These are awarded winners. In my department 75-80% of the applications that are sent in receives something, not sure if that applies universally.

Thanks a lot. I checked out the numbers before, but was wondering if there was a percentage of successful applicants per school (I doubt it). I'll be happy if I have a 75-80% chance!

I don't think those numbers are published. Each institution has a quota on how many they can submit each year so I would guess that the ratio of the number of successful applicants to the number of applicants recommended by an institution should be around the 0.7-0.9.

Ah well it didn't work. Apparently they won't hear appeals for this type of decision. Interestingly, a friend in my department had the same thing happen to her (NSERC summarily dismissed her PGS/CGS-D application on the grounds that it was outside their mandate), and her proposal consisted of work to be done with her supervisor who currently holds an NSERC discovery grant for precisely the project she proposed! Better luck to everyone else!!

Hello everyone,

I have a question, I am studying at UBC and was wondering if anyone from UBC received any notification from NSERC or if their on line status has been changed, since mine is still submitted and I have a very bad feeling about it !

Hello Arian

I am also a ubc student, my status for my nserc is "submitted". I've also recieved email from my faculty telling me my submission was sent to the university wide competition. You could try contacting your faculty office perhaps and asking them if they have sent the package? I

Hi Divigen,

I think my application has been sent to the FOG but was wondering if it has been sent to NSERC from FOG or not, since NSERC mentioned in its site that

if they received the application from the university , the status will be "approved", but then I don't know if they have updated status for any UBC student or simply my application was not sent to NSERC.

By any chance do you know if yours has been forwarded to NSERC?

I knew my application made it past the internal process and was being forwarded to NSERC when I was asked to include the contact information for the person uploading transcripts and to finalize my references online.

I'm from Ontario, and my NSERC status changed from 'Submitted' to 'Received' back on November 24th. I've attached a screencap below (and removed some of the sensitive information).
