Fall 2012 Applications

- Eileen -

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I just submitted my Fall 2012 applications to CSU Dominguez Hills, CSU Long Beach, and CSU Los Angeles. I mailed out my applications mid-January of last year for the Fall 2011 semester and was wait listed. I didn't want the same outcome so I turned mine in early this year (two weeks after they opened the filing period).

Has anyone turned in their applications? I really hope I get in this time around. Also, how long does it usually take to find out the results?

- Eileen

Hi,

Most CSU's, from what I understand, they send out acceptance letters BY April 15th.

I am a first time applicant for Fall 2012. I will not turn in my applications until December. (One of my professors doesn't have time to write me a letter of rec until then) I am applying to:

SDSU

Humboldt State

USC

CSUN

I was curious if you could post your stats from when you applied. I really have no idea where I stand and I am navigating this whole grad school application process myself.

My stats

Major GPA: 3.9

GPA at university (I am a transfer from a community college): 3.75

Overall (Includes everything from community college and at my undergrad university): 3.36

I take the GRE this month. (The only program that requires it out of all the places is SDSU and they only look at the analytical writing score which I expect to do really well on)

I am applying to:

SDSU (first choice)

USC

CSUN

Humboldt State

I want to get my MSW in direct practice and then get my LCSW. I want to work with veterans at the VA.

I worked at a psychiatric hospital for six months but had to quit to move to go to my undergrad program. I have extremely little volunteer experience.

One of my letters of rec I know will be outstanding. One will be strong. One will be positive but probably pretty generic. (I never got really buddy-buddy with any professors except the first one)

SDSU is my first choice.

Do I have a shot at any of these schools?

Thank you so much,

Tracey

I too turned in my CSUDH and CSULB apps in last week because of turning my apps in at the last minute. I am having a hard time completing my personal statement for CSULA - I feel they are asking too many questions and they are redundant.

Anywho... Hopefully we will hear something soon.

My first choice is CSULB, CSUDH, UCLA, CSUF, and CSULA...

Have a good one!

So, I'm applying to only three schools and am currently freaking out about each of them because I don't have the high GPA or loads of experience that others seem to.

The schools I've applied to are:

University of Michigan

Virginia Commonwealth University

University of Maryland

Here are my stats. I'm almost scared to put them up.

Overall GPA:
3.12

Major:
Psychology and Criminology (so, I'm not a BSW student, blah..)

Test scores:
Haven't taken anything due to nothing being required.

Letters of Recommendation:
All will be strong. One from my internship at a non profit, one from a research lab focusing on suicide prevention, and one from the Treasurer of the local NAMI affiliate that I volunteer for.

Experience:
I had an internship with a nonprofit for a summer, I worked for two research labs (suicide prevention and drug and alcohol addictions), and I volunteer with NAMI. I don't know if this is even considered experience since it's not specifically Social Work.

I'm going to call tomorrow the three schools to get their acceptance rates and such.

Also, I'm applying to USC's online program, if I don't get into any of the three programs aforementioned.

So, yeah. Good luck, everyone.

Good luck!

I am still working on my application for Fall 2012 to the U of MN. It's the only program I am applying for, so I am nervous! I have the application filled out, all letters of recommendation are in, personal statement draft done, and just need to work on my scholarly writing sample. My goal is to have it submitted by the end of next weekend.

My Stats:

GPA: 4.00

Major: Human Services

Test Scores: Not taking due to not being required

LOR: All should be strong, but I have only read one of the three (and it was great!)

Experience: 14 months experience working in supported employment services with adults w/ developmental disabilities

8 months residential experience working with adults w/ developmental disabilities

10 months residential experience working with adults w/ severe and persistent mental illness

I only applied to Michigan... I'm not overly optimistic because I need substantial financial aid (not just loans) to make it possible for me to attend if I get admitted...

GPA - 3.1 (low, ugh)

Major - Psychology

Test - none - not required

LOR - three strong, two from my PhD level supervisors

Experience:

- 1 summer internship in college as a special needs therapeutic horseback riding instructor

Graduated undergrad in 2007 and since then I have:

- 12 months experience as a outdoor education instructor & day care administrator & horseback riding instructor for kids

- 15 months experience as a full-time DCS caseworker

- 27 months (and counting) experience as a full-time mental health worker in a juvenile detention center

- 22 months (and counting) as a weekly volunteer at a special needs horseback riding program

I just submitted my applications for next fall to Hunter, NYU, Fordham and Albany. All but Hunter stated that they would render a decision in about 4-6 weeks. Does anyone know about how long it takes to hear from Hunter about an interview (required)? how long after the interview for a decision? Thanks!

Hi All!

I am applying to Hunter, NYU, Columbia and Yeshiva. I went to Hunter, Yeshiva and Columbia today to hand in my transcripts. Hunter and Columbia said that the personal statement counts for about 80% of their decision. Of course, looking back I submitted an essay to Yeshiva with a grammatical error. oh well!

My GPA is a 3.75. Thankfully I did not have to take the GREs. I interned for the Office of Children, Youth and Families for four months, and did HIV research for about a year. I'm also an RA at my undergraduate institution.

From what I hear, Yeshiva gives out good scholarships. Columbia said that they only have need-based aid, but it seems like that only entails governmental aid. NYU is known for their scholarships, but compared to the tuition, it's minimal. Hunter is my top choice. They have a reputation for being slow with paperwork and not answering the phones, but they have a very well-respected program. I believe they have the most competitive program in NYC.

Hi!

I'm applying to:

SFSU

UC Berkeley (CMH concentration)

CSULB

SJSU

CSUEB

My Stats:

GPA 3.86

Major: American Studies (Interdisciplinary Liberal Arts degree)

GRE Verbal: 159/84%

GRE Quantitative: 149/49%

GRE Analytical: 4.5/72%

LoRs: one very strong from supervisor/faculty in SW dept at SFSU, one somewhat strong from professor and mentor, one somewhat strong from field supervisor

Experience:Case Management Intern at San Francisco County Women's Jail for one year, Support Specialist at mental health counseling office for students for one year, Day camp coordinator for kids in homeless shelter for 4 months, current residential counselor at homeless family shelter.

I'm so nervous!! I really want Berkeley or SFSU but they are so crazy competitive and I'm only 23! Although I have lots of life experience being homeless as a teen I'm still really young and I hardly every see MSW students my age in those programs (I work at SFSU). My SOPs are okay, I'm mostly concerned about the "analytical question" for Berkeley.

Hi All,

I'm aiming to send in all my applications by the end of this month. I'm so conflicted on what I want to do next year, and what chances I have of getting into certain schools. I'm applying to U of Washington, Boston U, Columbia and Hunter College.

Stats:

GPA from Univ of Maryland: 3.3 (political science major)

Experience: 2 years of AmeriCorps w/ Habitat for Humanity

Internships in college with think tanks - including Center for American Progress

Volunteered at an orphanage in the Dominican Republic

I am hoping to pursue a macro path. I'd love to hear what everyone else is doing, when they hear back, chances of getting in, etc. etc.

Thanks for your input :)

Steph

Al my apps are in to the schools! Now I just need a couple of LOR's sent in, and one transcript so I can send Simmons my packet.

Now, the constant status checking, w-2 waiting, and obsessively reading the results page can begin.

I was pretty calm about my acceptances (or lack thereof as of yet) but now I'm kind of freaking out. I applied to Columbia, NYU, Fordham, Hunter, and Yeshiva in September- I'm doing a semester abroad and wanted everything taken care of before I left. Now I'm looking back over my applications and feel like in my rush to get the apps in I didn't do as well as I should have on my personal statements. My GPA is 4.0 and I have strong recommendations, as well as a respectable amount of work experience. Does anyone know just how important the personal statement is in the application?

Also- has anyone been contacted for an interview yet?

Hi everyone,

I come from China and I guess sometimes international students may have the priority.

My stats:

GPA - 85/100, guess around 3.45

Major - Psychology (graduate this year)

Test - GRE V570(80%) Q780(88%) AW 3.5(2.6%) TOEFL 105

Intership: 1 month @ education co.

4 months @ domestic violence prevention center

4 months @ employee care center

3 years office coordinator and class counselor

Volunteer: 2 months @ rural area, lived with a "left-behind" child(whose parents worked far away from home) for two weeks

6 months @ nursing home

Research : Only one related to social work, about domistic violence victims.

Others are related to psychology, on time management and positive psychological capital.

(But in China the quality of the research is not so good.)

Other: exchange student @ Taiwan for 6 months

Applied to NYU, Umich, Upenn and WUSTL

Get accepted by Upenn.

At first they offered nothing, and I emailed to the director and he reviewed my material.

He mentioned that they didn't offer me the scholarship because of my writing skills. I guess the statement was not their type.

But maybe my email worked and they finally offered me $13500 for the first year.

Still waiting for other decisions.

My background is not as competitive as yours, but I guess the shchools think that my strenth is my Chinese perspective =]

I applied to some of the same schools and my applications were finalized on December 2. I haven't been contacted for an interview from Hunter, or heard anything from NYU, Columbia, or Fordham. Has anyone heard from these schools regarding their Fall 2012 application for the full-time program?

I am so freaked out right now because it seems that I have really waited too long to turn in my applications. I applied to four schools, two of which I finished on the due date. I am working on my apps for four more schools, 3 of which are due at the end of this week. Ahh!

I think I was a bit over-confident when I first started applying, but lately I have realized this is all more competitive than I thought.

I am applying to:

University of Michigan

University of Minnesota

University of Chicago

University of Maryland (Balt)

New York University

Columbia University

Boston University

Boston College

I have a 3.76 overall GPA from U Michigan, double major in Psych and Creative Writing with a minor in German, completing a writing honors thesis currently, four years of research experience in a social psych lab, and 2 years of a teaching job, a survey research internship, and research fellowship. My only REAL human services experience was tutoring immigrant kids in Berlin for a few weeks.

I'm so nervous because I really don't have much volunteer experience or know a whole ton about social work broadly defined. As my undergrad experiences clearly indicate, I was originally going to go for a PhD in social or clinical psych, but then I realized (perhaps too late, this past september) that I am tired of academia and like hands-on work far more. I also desperately need money from these schools because I already have debt from undergrad. GAH!

I submitted my application on December 5, got an email asking me to schedule an interview on December 8. The interview was on December 14. Then the final decision came on Janurary 4. (They took off from Dec. 22 to Jan.3 for the holiday).

Normally it takes one week to get a interview, one week for you to prepare for it and another two weeks to wait for the final decision. That's for the Chinese students as far as I know.
