I replied in the Acceptances/Rejections/Decisions thread, but that would be me. My smile turned into a frown as I read the email - it sounded like an acceptance for the first few sentences... They had nearly 400 applications this year. The email made it sound like they've finished reviewing all of the applications, so perhaps they'll be sending out acceptance/rejection emails soon.

i wonder if the sociology-demography joint program is on the same schedule...

I wondered the same, and then depressed myself by going to the website, where I read:

Our faculty committee will meet in early January for an initial review of the files. We will make some admissions decisions at this point but may need additional time to make all admissions decisions.

But I'm trying not to obsess over it...much.

I think I am getting a tension headache... and an ulcer... and I kept my cool until now.

Well done jen, that's fantastic. I have never had so many pointless feelings like "what does waitlist mean" and "but there's never berkeley waitlist postings - does that mean something?" I'm considering reverting to my non-smart phone to avoid checking emails ... well, permanently.

As jen said - good luck to everyone waiting!

Posted in the acceptance/rejection post as well but was accepted to Berkeley Sociology PhD today. Email from "Heather A. Haveman" this morning saying congratulations and inviting me to a prospective students day in March. Was only about two paragraphs long but said to anticipate a full letter and offer of aid in the mail "in the next couple weeks"

Personal stats: I was a poli sci, comm studies undergrad at a small southern liberal arts school. Never actually took a sociology class but my focus in comm was rhetoric of social protest and in poli sci was racial and ethnic politics, and politics of abortion. Had undergrad teaching or research assistantships in each of these. Also a minor in "black cultures in the Americas."

Two papers published in undergraduate journals.

GRE: 710 verbal, 740Q, 4.5 writing.

Two excellent LOR from not-famous professors and one probably so-so one from the President of a university.

Personal statement was probably so-so but I def tried to emphasize how my non sociology background would benefit a soc program.

Also applied to: washington-seattle, texas, duke, michigan-ann arbor, stanford, harvard, princeton, yale

Rejected from Texas.

GOOD LUCK ALL!

hi! what was your GPA if you don't mind me asking?

Congrats on being accepted to Berkeley. Berkeley is definitely my dream school and I'm hoping a professor is currently writing me a congratulatory email. One can only hope!

ANLstyle I wanted to 'like' this since it was so positive and optimistic! I'm going to try that attitude too:-)

Out of curiosity, how does one acquire a letter from a university president? :P

Haha well I got to know the Pres in question before she was in fact a President, while she was working in administration and teaching one class a semester. And then my last year of university she accepted a job offer as Pres of a different school but I kept in contact and two years later I requested a letter... Go to a small school?

Don't suppose anyone bit the bullet and got in touch with Berkeley about whether all acceptances have gone out?!

Talked with a Berkeley professor today and he said they had offered admission to 22 students (despite the applicant pool of well over 400). Not sure all these "have gone out" in case it was assigned to several faculty to handle, and some are simply slower than others. But I can say they at least have their top 22 picked out.

I wonder does the number include the applicant in joint program with demography department?

Any idea of what cohort size are they aiming for?
