Hey guys!

I'm applying to CSULB MSW- 2 yr CYF concentration for Fall 2012 Admissions...

I submitted my application 2 days before the deadline ( I know, poor planing!) And was wondering if anyone applying to CSULB has heard anything from the Department?

Wait list? Rejection? Admission?

I am seriously FURIOUS with CSULB right now. They called me TODAY to tell me that I didn't submit a syllabus with my stats course. WELL...I took the course four years ago (why on earth would i keep the syllabus???) on the other side of the state and the professor no longer teaches there. I submitted my application the first week of January and my application status said "complete" the entire time. How am I supposed to get the syllabus? I'm in northern California, the community coolege is in southern California. AND I have no idea how to reach the professor.

Ugh.

Yeah, I thought it was really weird that they were requiring a stats syllabus. Luckily, I still had mine from 2 yrs ago. The wait is seriously giving me some pretty bad sugar cravings! I think what makes it worse is that I only applied to CSULB... we'll see how it goes.

Anyway, good luck w/ your apps and hopefully something works out for ya!

I submitted my app early Dec and got an email by Dec 15 that they received my application and that it was complete. They had winter break soon after so they got to my application by Jan. (at least I hope).

I have not heard a thing from the school and this waiting game is causing me so much stress.

The school received approx 1,200 apps last year, and they take a long time to make decisions. Some of my friends, who applied last year, got a decision by July and even early Aug. Ugh!

tbird1239-I had the same issue. But I called the math department at the community college I attended and got a current syllabus and the school accepted it. Also, CSULB had a list of Statistic courses that are pre-approved and technically I didnt have to submit my syllabus. I understand your frustrations. I hope the school is able to work something out with you.

Hey KMSW,

Yeah, they told me to get a syllabus from the college too, which I think defeats the purpose. You want me to demonstrate what was covered in MY stats class with a syllabus from a different teacher? Ugh, it makes no sense. I'm a California resident, went to an accredited CA community college, and as far as I'm concerned, math is still math, no matter where you take it.

Oh well, at least LB isn't one of my top choices, just a backup. It's funny saying that because it is so competitive but I really don't hae any desire to go there. Their concentrations are way too narrow and limited for me and what I want to do.

I'm curious about your top choice.

I just got accepted into LB but hoping to get accepted at UCLA and CSULA as well.

My top choice is SDSU. I really want to get into their 2-year direct practice concentration. I have done a LOT of research, and for the price, SDSU is the best CSU. It is a generalist direct practice, which I want, because I want to work with the military/veterans. CSULB is an excellent program, I just have no interest in working with children or older adults.

I also applied to CSUN, which I would rather go to over CSULB too just because the concetrations are different from CSULB, even though Long Beach's program is better.

I completed my undergrad at SDSU and a couple of my friends will be graduating from SDSU w/ their MSW's. Great, great program! I didn't apply there simply because SDSU is very competative and what can I say, I was a bit intimdated. I'm really hoping to get into CSULB...it'll be nice to move back to my hometown for a while. When did you receive your acceptance letter from LB? What concentration did you apply for? Any stipends?

I have heard some awesome feedback about the program at SDSU. I have a friend completing this year. She did the one year advance standing program. I wanted to apply there (because I took the GRE) but I didnt seriously see myself considering SD if I got accepted. I couldn't afford

living there. Even though it's expensive to live in LA too. Lol But good luck to you and hope that you get accepted soon. :) keep us posted.

I didn't receive an acceptance letter from LB, I'm still waiting. Yeah, SD is actually cheap for me because I can live with my mom...not my first choice, but personally, I would rather be living at home at 22 years old than racking up useless debt from living expenses,

Hey! When did you hear back from CSULB? What concentration did you choose? Did you apply for any stipends? What are your stats? Sorry for all the q's... I just want to get a better feel about what my changes for admission for CSULB will be? I turned in my app 2 days before deadline... :/

Thanks for your time!

I got an email on Monday 2/13 with their decision. I just need to be cleared by enrollment services. Which I should be fine.

I got accepted into the 2 year children youth and families and told them that I was only interested in the mental health stipend. I will apply for that stipend by the end of my first year. (I think that's how it works)

I have a 3.87 GPA in Social Work

3.48 Overall

Current Exp:

Provide individual rehab and case management services for SED children and TAY, and their families.

Case Manager for pregnant and parenting teens for a school district.

Co-facilitate a parenting group (I work with the children 10-16yrs old)

Volunteer as a Crisis Counselor/Advocate for a crisis line for rape and domestic violence survivors.

Previous Exp:

Case Manager for pregnant and parenting teens program. Adolescent Family Life Program and Cal-LEARN.

Worked at a shelter for children involved in prostitution and pornography. (12-18yrs old) My main work there was working on their national crisis hotline. Rescues from pimps, suicide and drug overdose.

I worked at the children's court working with foster youth. I worked at the Law firm that handle the cases of foster youth in LA county and assisted the investigators in updating their reports to the attorneys.

Other Volunteer exp:

Leadership in SW. Coordinated Lobby days for 75 BSW/MSW students.

Co-facilitated meetings. Set up guest speakers in the field of SW.

Mentored foster youth.

AIDS WALK

I mailed my application Dec 8, got an email Dec 15 that it was complete. But i was told they they would look at my application after winter break.

What about you?

Geez! Impressive!

SDSU grad c/o 2010

Major: Criminal Justice

Minor: Sociology

GPA: 2.95 :((

Current Experience:

Full-time Mental Health Worker/Case Manager for non-profit counseling agency in San Diego County for over a year...

Part-time Residential Supervisor for non-profit transitional home in San Diego serving former foster youth...

Bi-lingual, bi-cultural...

I started working right after graduating... trying to build my experience. Working an average of 60-65hours a week= no social life or time to volunteer. I have participated in the past couple of AIDS walks in L.A. but didn't put it down as volunteer experience. I was a student-athlete during undergrad so I hardly had time to do any volunteer work. I'm planning on applying for the CAL-SWEC stipend but need to get admitted into the program before I can apply for it.

I applied for the 2 yr CYF program...like you, but knowing your stats...and comparing them to mine... now I'm more anxious that before! Not feeling so lucky anymore. Wish me luck!! :/

I turned in my app on Jan. 30 and I still haven't heard from the MSW Dept saying they have reviewed my app and that its complete. I just checked my status online and it only says that it has been cleared from Enrollment services and that it is now being reviewed by the dept. Now I'm really getting worried... :( This is no bueno!

I wish you lots of luck! :)

I think experience is more important than anything. Ive been working for a few years now, so i have got tons of exp.

I also believe that you have not received a confirmation email because you applied so close to the deadline. They get tons of apps. They are probably still sorting them out. But I hope you hear something soon. Keep us posted on the decision!

Mucha suerte!

Where do you go online to check your status, mrod88?

So I called CSULB yesterday and they said I should get an admissions decision within the next 5 to 15 weeks...... 5 TO 15 WEEKS??? ARE YOU F***ING KIDDING ME?!?!?

UGHHHHHH.......

I know, I know, CSU's are much harder to get into than private schools, (Columbia has something like a 50/50 acceptance rate) because state schools are far more competitive than private institutions. (Lets face it, getting an MSW for a near $100,000 is so ridiculous, who wants to take on that kind of debt for one of the lowest paying career paths? Stupid.)

I just want to know. I don't want to wait around until June or possibly July to receive a rejection. And no one has heard a peep from my top choice.

The waiting game is making me bitter.

Received an e-mail from CSULB MSW Dept. They have finally confirmed that they have received my app and that they will be reviewing it shortly. Don't know what my chances of being admitted are but I'm only hoping for the best. I'm already thinking of a consolation prize. :((

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm waiting for a response too. Let's hope they send them out soon! Do you think we'd really have to wait til May to hear back from schools? That's a LONG time. =(

I will consider myself lucky if I hear back from them by May. I summitted my app on the deadline date. A couple of years ago my friend applied and was waitlisted. She didn't get an official admission until ONE week before Fall semester started. I'm really hoping I hear back from them by May though. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
