Hi, I am very interested in this thread. I am going to apply to the HGSE for Fall 2013 but I am curious what other peoples' objectives are. I have just been doing some looking and it seems like there are so many different fellowship degrees out there that will pay for the master's that I am wondering if I am making a mistake in overlooking these. My current plan as follows was to apply to HGSE, TC, UPenn, Michigan, Stanford and maybe a couple more. I have been drawn toward the Philosophy & Education thread at TC and the Learning & Teaching track at HGSE. I wish I could say my plan was more exact but I have interests in teaching at the secondary level and possibly going on further to education leadering roles or university teaching. Am I making a mistake in avoiding the traditional certification route? It just seems if I want employment when I am done with a masters (which I sincerely do), I am avoiding the most direct paths. The fellowship tracks, such as NYC Teaching Fellows, etc. . . had never really appealed to me before but maybe they are something to consider, too? Would love to hear from other people what their thoughts are. Also, stats to follow at some later date. . . still have not taken my GRE yet.

Did anyone else "attend" the virtual information session tonight?

I did. I couldn't believe how chaotic the chatroom was and how rude some people were with their questions. I almost wish they'd saved the questions until the end, it might not have been the best idea format-wise but I think the session would have run more smoothly. Considering they must do these online info sessions every year, it seemed very poorly planned to me.

No :( How was it? I attended the higher education session last month which included some application information as well. I loved the Higher Education session. It was very informative and I learned even more about the program.

Coloradogirl, when was the HE session, and was it for MEd or PhD? I wish I'd known about it! Would you mind sharing some highlights?

Loseric, it was for Ed.M. It was in mid-October. They did not open up for questions until the end, although they did make it interactive at the beginning where we clicked a map showing where we were all from and they had some basics questions about how many years we have worked, which year we were planning to apply, etc. The rest of the event had the program director share a little bit about the structure of classes, internships, and the president in residence program. They talked a lot about the flexibility of the program with the three core required courses and then the flexibility to choose courses from across campus. Two current students shared their experience up to this point. It was really valuable to hear from them and about their search for a program and why they chose HGSE. It was followed by a brief overview of the application process, and then the last ten minutes or so were open to questions answered electronically as well as some by the speakers. It was extremely organized and informational. Since I can't get away from work right now to go visit in person, it definitely helped.

What types of questions came up at last night's event. Anything important?

Thanks for the details on the HE info session! It sounds like it was really informative and gave good insight into the program. Now I'm even more sorry I missed it, darn. :( I checked the website this morning and it looks like they don't archive the info sessions, either.

Honestly, you didn't miss much last night, particularly if you got an overview of admissions info at the HE session. They did something similar with demographics (location and degrees people were applying for), had a financial aid staffer speak about the types of aid available and how funding works for the doctoral programs. Then the admissions rep came on and went over the application, piece by piece (statement of purpose, recommendations, tests, etc.) They allowed for five questions after each session, which is what took up the bulk of the time. As for the Q&A, I can only liken it to a shark feeding frenzy as everyone jockeyed for their question to be answered, most of them very rudely. People were asking questions in all caps, repeatedly, and about topics we weren't even discussing at the time. What I found frustrating was the staff answering the questions usually picked very specific questions that only applied to one person or a small subset of people. Considering they were strapped for time (the session even ran over by about 20min), it didn't seem very wise. Most of the other questions addressed what you'd expect: if they have a minimum score for the GRE, who to use as recommenders, etc. Hope that helps.

I'm excited to find a fellow HE person on here! Where else are you applying, if you don't mind sharing?

It was somewhat informative, but it mostly consisted of all the information found in the FAQ's. Does anyone know if there was already an info session for TIE?

Yup. It was last week. Even though I've been eyeing the program for a while, I forgot to attend.

Would anyone like to swap SOP's? I just finished my first draft, and I would love to have someone take a look at it, and get an idea of what other people are doing. I'm worried mine is too dry.

I wouldn't mind. I'm applying to the Prevention Science program, though, FWIW.

GRE Score (Revised): 154 V, 154 Q, 4.5 AWA (weak point)

GPA: 3.93 Overall, 4.0 Major (strong point)

Work Experience: N/A - I'm currently a senior. However, I do have significant experience working with urban youth over the past four years at both the elementary and high school levels.

Undergrad Institution (Public, Private, Ivy, etc..): Public (University of Alabama at Birmingham)

Research Experience: N/A. I'm a business major that realized that education was my "calling" relatively late into my college career. So, it's fortunate in the sense that I'm going to be doing something I love, but unfortunate in that I don't have the resume that I could've had.

Applying for PhD or Masters: Masters, 2013

Program: Prevention Science

What Other Schools Are You Applying To: Boston College (MAT/MST in History and English both), UPenn (Accepted)

I realize Harvard is a reach for me at this point time, but I figured I'd give it a shot considering I won't be applying for a doctorate for several years down the line. I'm confident in my SoP and LORs, so who knows. I'm hoping that those will make the difference in terms of me getting in, as I'm quite aware that I'm a subpar to mediocre (at best) applicant.
