Any Other Slavic Applicants This Year?

Great! We might be the only two on grad cafe, but hopefully not... This is my second year applying. The waiting period is awful but having a little community of people going through the same thing really helps.

What's your area?

Hi all!

I am thinking of applying to Slavic Linguistics PhD programs for fall 2014, meaning I'll be doing applications next fall. I am excited and just wanted to say hi to all my fellow Slavic language lovers! Ablukhov, it looks like I'm planning to apply to a lot of schools you're applying to, albeit in linguistics instead of literature, so I am curious to see where you end up!

Hey kaseyleigh! Linguistics is such a fascinating topic. I've taken a few classes in semantics and philosophy of language, although I really don't know much about the linguistics as a discipline within specific language departments. Do you have an area of interest? What languages do you speak?

It is fascinating! I would be lying if I said I knew a ton about it at this point, but my area of interest is foreign language acquisition in adults. I am a law student right now, focused on international law, specifically Eastern Europe, so I love the idea of melding my loves of law, policy, and foreign languages in a career plan. I am certainly not fluent in Russian, but at an intermediate level, and hopefully participating in Middlebury this summer. I'm waiting to hear about fellowships. Also, I'm trying to learn German right now and studying in Switzerland next fall, so hopefully I can learn and practice while I'm there!

What is your background and what are your academic interests, ablukhov (and everyone else)?

I'm waiting to hear back about Middlebury scholarships too- so with any luck maybe I'll see you there... I'm also going to apply to Bryn Mawr and SWEESL as back ups because it's easier to get funding for those programs. If you haven't heard of them, you might want to take a look...And since you're working on language acquisition, any tips you have on improving fluency are more than welcome :)

Anyway, interests: I'm working the influence of religious philosophy on Russian lit. of the 19th and 20th centuries- mostly the symbolists though

I'm applying to a few Russian area studies M.A. programs, and a couple Slavic Language M.A. programs as well!

Harvard Davis Center, Harriman Institute at Columbia, Duke's Slavic and Eurasian Studies Department, UNC Chapel Hill REECA programs, and University of Washington.

Nice to hear from others in the field!

I just got an email from Chapel Hill this morning saying they are not accepting new students for Slavic MA, because their programing is closing, and that they will send me a check for the application fee. : /

I've submitted 3/7-8ish apps so far. I'm applying mostly to PhD programs. I'm hoping to focus on Golden Age Literature especially the Romantics and Realists.

Besides UC Berkeley we don't have any overlap! I decided to stay in the midwest.

I've visited two schools so far but am nervous for when more interviews come up. I need to brush up on my language skills (ran out of language courses at my undergrad), hopefully living in Moscow all next semester will help.

2 out of 7 in! And I'm taking a few days before tackling the rest.

Eidda, I'm also applying to PhD programs, and I really wanted to apply to Indiana! But for me (for my husband really) it doesn't work to be far from the big east/west coast cities. You're applying to Berkeley though? I have a friend in the program and he loves it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for the hints ablukhov! I applied for SWSEEL today and I'm probably going to apply to Bryn Mawr also! Does anyone know anything about the summer intensive at the Monterey Institute of International Studies? I was going to apply but then after researching it didn't seem like they had full funding from the institute itself (it sounds like you have to find your own outside funding).
