What were you doing when you got accepted?

I saw this topic last year and thought it was interesting and entertaining to know what people were doing and how they fell when they found out they got accepted.

I was killing an hour before I started driving cross country with my wife and kids to visit her elderly mom, who was not doing well. I found out I was accepted with full funding via email. So after we finally arrived we visited her mom and then the next day I visited with my POI (major adviser) at the school that accepted me. Jung called events of this nature synchronicity.

Awesome. Nice thread.

I got an email from my POI with subject saying 'Good news is on the way' and no content early in the evening. I was perplexed and got a bit worried. Then I went to this party my friend was throwing and we party-ed till late that night. I came back to my room and checked my email, and it included my offer letter from the department with funding. It was a good feeling, I did not sleep that night.

Thanks,

ruud9.

I woke up in the morning and checked my email and found my acceptance letter with funding....my boyfriend who lives in another city arrived the same day in less than 15 mins of me seeing the email....and that was the day we had planned to go for a weekend trip so it was a great day! it was a very sweet victory:)

I was at work and got an email from the financial aid office congratulating me on my acceptance to the school. I hadn't even received official notice from the department I applied to. A couple hours later it was official. My co-workers and I had a mini-celebration.

Mine was really fun. We knew that if I got accepted I'd hear within a couple days, and I was meeting with my PI in her office when the call came in. I walked out into the hall to take the call and while I did another faculty member walked into her office. While I was on the phone with the Admissions Chair I could hear her shushing the other professor as she tried to hear what I was saying on the phone. When I walked back in she gave me a huge hug and had tears in her eyes. She has done so much to help me and I was really happy I could share that moment with her.

When I got my first official acceptance (which is most likely the program I will attend), I was at an informal dinner as part of an interview weekend for another university.  The acceptance was also to the highest ranked school I applied to, so that definitely brought by confidence up for the interview.  The only bummer was that I couldn't really shout the news to anyone in proximity...would've been a bit of an awkward situation haha.

Mine was insane.

I had just gotten off the phone with my mother who told me a friend of the family had gotten into a very serious car accident. While he was ok, I was really shaken up and crying.

I happened to check my e-mail and there was the e-mail from Queen's - full funding and an OGS.

My emotions did a 180 and I couldn't stop shaking, haha.

i was at work in my lab/office for all of my acceptances, actually.. which is kind of sad, but it was nice to have a bunch of lovely co-workers around to give me high fives. my boss did a happy dance in the kitchen-come-break-room with me when i got into my top choice (now my school-to-be)!

I was lying in bed with the flu.

Similar story here -- I was on a sick day from work and got the email around 4:30/5pm as I was laying on the couch, with bronchitis.  I could barely talk and had to gesture as I told my husband that I got into one of my two top choices!!  Yep, I accepted the following Tuesday... it's not every day that dreams and reality actually match up like that!!

And now for the obligatory ... "Ain't Nobody Got Time Fo' Dat!" (look up "Sweet Brown" on youtube, it's absolutely hilarious!)

1.  York - had just come back from Paris on a research trip and was staying over in London for two days.  I got in the door and got my phone hooked up to Wifi and "beep."   "What the-- OH GOD YORK ACCEPTED ME!!!"

2.  Oxford -- sick for most of spring break, assumed that York was going to be it.  Woke up at 11.  Checked email.  Incoherent for 3 hours thereafter.

I woke up hung over from the night before, and my phone's charge had died from the night's festivities. Too lazy to charge it and turn it on, I logged on to my Gmail on my computer. The first email was a great start to my day as it read, "Futurama Season 7 Now Streaming on Netflix!". Then beneath that was my acceptance loaded with a GAship. Needless to say, I screamed as if I saw a black widow on my bed scaring my roommate studying in the next room.

I've never been so happy from my phone dying.

I was about to head out for a work-related meeting. It was a phone call in November so I thought it was an interview, but the prof said "recommended for admission" so I knew it was an acceptance.

I had just finished a phone interview with the POI. I was telling my mom that I thought it went pretty well, for as awkward as I am with interviews, and then my phone lit up and there was an acceptance letter. I'm still kinda reeling. Please forgive me while I go and comment all the threads about acceptances that I didn't get to comment last year. B)

I was on a train from Philadelphia, where I was visiting my parents over spring break, heading to New York City. I was going to be taking minutes at several meetings for my MA advisor's non-profit project. He was graciously trying to provide me with work after a string of upsetting rejections. My phone was on vibrate so that I wouldn't disturb the other passengers, and when I saw that he called, I assumed that he was just confirming my hotel reservations. His voicemail, though, had some much better news than that!

I was rolling around on the floor playing with my daughter. I had given up hope because I had started seeing acceptances for half of the schools I applied to in the previous 2 days. I swore off grad cafe for the day, and was enjoying the day. Then suddenly, my phone rings. I looked down at it, and it was a number I didn't recognize. Then I see under the number it says Iowa City, IA. I immediately started hyperventilating and ran to get my daughter a snack so she wouldn't disturb the call! :)

My girlfriend got hired at her first nursing position, so I was waiting in the HR office for her while she did some computer tests. I pulled out her laptop and checked my email, and there it was. Couldn't tell anyone at the moment, so I just had to settle for one of those suppressed internal celebrations with just a smile on my face to show it. Then she came out and I told her about it. We also got engaged the evening before that, so it was a pretty nice weekend.

I was in a Second Cup (Canadians know what it is) drinking coffee with three other friends. As an habit, I was refreshing my inbox every now and then. Suddenly, there it was! an email from my second choice school. I was so excited, but soon I thought it might be a rejection. I gave the computer to my friend to open the email and tell me the news. I was reading the reactions on his face, but he kept a straight face until he was done reading the entire letter, I was freaking out. And finally, he looked up with a big smile, "acceptance with full funding my friend!"
