How is Chem GPA Calculated?

Recommended Posts

Hey all, first post but long time lurker!

I'm wondering how the Chem GPA is calculated. Is it based on the major GPA, including all non-chemistry classes such as Physics 1 & 2 etc. or is it purely Chemistry classes?

Also I am applying for Organic Chemistry programs with a focus in synthesis, so does this also factor into play with GPA? As in, would classes such as Physics really play a role in GPA considering Organic is not as relevant?

Thanks for everyone's input!

Welcome to the forums!

When I was asked for my "Chemistry GPA" I just solely factored in classes that started with the name "Chem" (i.e. Chem 101, Chem 234...etc.) . This seemed the most fair to me since different schools have all kinds of different requirements for graduating as a chemistry major, whereas the chemistry classes are fairly the same.

If you aren't comfortable with that, then it's best to ask a staff advisor what "GPA for your major" means for your school.
