I, too, am curious about the odds for getting this fellowship. I plan on applying for this fellowship in November 2014. I've searched endlessly but have yet to find any substantive information on who the ideal candidate is. To what extent does one have to be involved in gender studies or gender-related activism? My dissertation topic has nothing to do with gender, but I have mentored female students in the past and continue to do so. Would this be enough to make me competitive? Any information would be greatly appreciated, including whether or not I should direct this inquiry to another board. Good luck, everyone!

all good questions. my research does have a gender/women's studies component to it and i have many years of mentoring female students but i still have no idea what my chances are. by creepily google searching the winners last year i found that a lot of the winners for the american fellowship specifically work on gender/sexuality/women's studies. a lot of them were researching rights issues and the law side of things, but also some in education, sociology, health. some already appeared to be associate professors which seemed strange since this is a dissertation completion grant...hopefully someone on this forum will win it this year and that way we can have a clearer understanding of the ideal candidate :)

Sorry Anthro14. This is my second time applying. I don't know how they select the awardees. Two of my colleagues got the American Felllowship though. I applied in the international. I noticed that in my category, most of the awardees are in the sciences.

Yea, it's kinda a bummer that they don't even send us individual emails. it almost feels as though i didn't even apply without that closure, haha.
