I just wanted to start this post and ask everyone who has applied this year or before about this program. Any details , any news you have heard from the program like- how many applicants per year, how many people they take in - ect ect.

I would love to talk about anything you guys want to.

Hi there!

I applied this year. There have already been two acceptances reported on the results page. Congrats to you, out there somewhere!

Here're some admissions statistical information:

Congrats BTKOU! I'm good friends with several of the students there. They are a great bunch!

Thanks!  It will be my first time to the west coast.  Do you know if all students there are funded?  I was told funding would not be decided until late February / early March.

Hey Daisy,

Did you call the office?

Hi! , no i did not call the office, i emailed John Papadopoulos and just asked him when admission decisions will be made and how many students they expect to make offers to, and he told me that the first tier of students had been decided on, and notified. I was not one of them but i am on the wait list...to my question which place i am on the list, there was no answer

Interesting! Congrats on the wait list! I feel too intimidated to e-mail him today. haha Maybe I'll send him one tomorrow if my status hasn't changed on the app decision page

hahahha dont be intimidated- you will not be finding out anything for a while if you are on that list, as he said that waitlist wont be touched until March...

congrats!!!! hahah. maybe we will be colleges ! I am just wondering,....how many people could the wait-list be ???? I AM HOPING its not like 50% of the original applicants are on that list :)

Anyone know about or has been on wait lists before where they know. ???

I also talked to the director and he explained to me that this wait list is not in order. THe wait list is a pool of applicants from which they will accept how much ever spaces are freed from those that do not accept the offers. This year is just bad luck-  they normally take up to 11 people and this year they are taking in only 5-6 people!!! so at least half of us on that wait list would have been in!!!!!

I would guess anywhere between 7-10

9 students were invited to the prospective students week.

About 6 students enroll each year. Given that about 1/2 to 2/3 of the invited students will enroll, I wouldn't get my hopes up as a waitlisted applicant. I think few (if any) of the most selective archaeology programs have to resort to the waitlist very often.

Hey aarch,

Thanks for the information! Do you have any idea how the waitlist works there (e.g., a ranked order, by advisor, etc.)? Five people on the results page have reported being on the waitlist--do you think there are many more? I'm not trying to get my hopes up too much, but I'm just curious. : )

Ahh, I just saw this. Thanks for the info, Daisy!

It looks like UCLA may have changed some things since my application round. For what it's worth though: they had an interview/visit weekend (for which I was out of the country) and they decided funding after that. The funding wait list from that was ranked and I received funding rather late in the game. Before offering me funding, they did pay for me to visit after I was stateside for Easter. I got the impression they only had funding for 5-6 split across all regions for Archaeology, and they want a diverse group. I ultimately chose another university.

Thanks for the info, rkg! It's good to hear that people actually do turn down acceptances there. :P

I have a hunch that the waitlist is made up of people with differing specializations who will have the chance of being admitted if an accepted person with a similar specialization declines. Or something like that. This would be somewhat supported by what Daisy said about the waitlist not being ranked.

Ahh... going crazy.

Thank you for the info rkg! I am really confused by their website about funding so .....thank you! If i may ask you- why did you choose to decline the offer?

And xstopfloating, i think that generally, about 50% decline admissions- or course that would sound so much better if it was out of the 10-11 people they usually take rather than the 5-6 this time.....we are talking about 2-3 people opening up a spot here......based on average statistics ...ughhhh.

Is this your top school choice?

I also want to thank you for posting your information.  It is always valuable to hear what past applicants experienced.  I too am a bit confused about funding.  Do you by chance remember a ballpark estimate of what their funding package was like and do they fund all their admitted students?
