GSPIA Fall Admission 2014

Recommended Posts

  • 2 weeks later...

Received an e-mail today stating... Congratulations on your admittance to the Graduate School of Public and International Affairs (GSPIA). We are delighted to welcome you to the Johnson Institute for Responsible Leadership, one of GSPIA’s Centers of Excellence.

Anyone receive anything similar? Do you think this mean funding?

I received an e-mail about a week ago letting me know that I was accepted for Int. Dev. (Human Security). I just got my funding letter today and was awarded a half-ride. Someone contacted me from the Ford Institute for Human Security...so, hopefully this means an assistantship is in the works too for me. :S Does anyone else know anymore about the assistantship application process?

@bwalke99 I got a similar email yesterday about the Ford Institute, not sure quite how to interpret it! Is anyone attending admitted student day on April 4th? I'm interested if there's more info given as to opportunities for assistantships!

I've looked all over their website and found nothing about the assistantship process. I received an e-mail Ford Institute yesterday, so not sure what to think now- haven't received anything in the mail yet.

I'll be attending the admitted day, hopefully they will have assistantship information then for us! May call next week to get a better idea if additional funding opportunities are available.

I just heard back from my grad admissions advisor today. Assistantships aren't officially posted anywhere, but we will receive e-mails about vacancies should assistantship positions open. It is relieving to hear though that assistantships aren't just reserved for doctoral students though they are still extremely competitive.

Here's more information on assistantships that I've gotten so far from the student director. As far as assistantships go, TA are non-existent as obviously there are no undergrads for TAs to teach, but he was still somewhat vague about other GA positions. As far as I know, any positions available through GSPIA will be posted throughout the year, but this could just be normal hourly wage work as opposed to anything that'd count in the way of tuition. I also heard back from the Ford Institute, and they don't offer paid research assistantships. So, I'm assuming they offer seminars, networking opportunities, and volunteer stuff. I hope this helps anyone with questions.

I was also admitted last month to the security studies program. Recently I have been in contact with a few professors through email about potential leads on research. The Ford Center contacted me but their opportunities are not paid but still worth looking into for networking. A particular professor told me to call him but when I did he didn't answer and he didn't respond to any follow-up emails. I'll assume he probably slipped into a busy period.

I would definitely be up for it. I connected my Pitt mail account to Facebook. So, we could make a group inside of the larger listing of Pitt groups.

Also, did anyone else get an e-mail about a new GSA position and is planning to pursue it? I am definitely considering it, but this seems like something aimed more towards doctoral students specifically.

Hey guys, I saw this link with GSPIA FAQs that I thought were helpful as some of this stuff wasn't mentioned in detail on the website.  http://mstaniland.wordpress.com/faq-frequently-asked-questions/

Edited:  Looks like the above link is kind of old, so I'm not sure if certain procedures and policies have changed or not...still a good place if you have questions and you can just verify the info later.
