Incoming students at Icahn SMMS

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I decided to make a separate thread for the incoming class at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Let's use this as a way to network with each other and help each other figure out school logistics stuff.

Let me briefly introduce myself. I'm from Southern California, did my undergraduate in Northern California, and know nothing about New York. I'm still looking for a place to live and maybe potential flatmates. Any advice is welcome! As for the school logistics, I've completed the financial aid and health forms/tox screen. I've never visited campus.

Hello,

I'm also from Southern California and I went to la for school. I also have no idea about New York. I haven't 100% committed yet to the school but I'm trying to work out the logistics and everything (potential roommates here? Preferably girls if possible). I've never been to New York but the idea of another city is intriguing and it's the only school I've gotten into so far, but still waiting on others.

For those for sure going, are you planning on going to the orientation? Also, are you doing mount Sinai housing or looking for another apartment somewhere else? I was looking at Hoboken as someone mentioned but I couldn't seem to find anything too cheap there. Also, if you go to NYC for your MPH are you looking to work when there since classes are at night I believe? Thanks :) I've literally done nothing after being accepted so I'm just trying to see where everyone else is at!

I'm from Orange County and female! Haha, hint, hint? I have no gender preferences with my roommates; I'm just looking for my own room. I'm planning on going to school-wide orientation (August 11th, I believe) and I might head to New York in July to scout around for places to live. I am 100% committed to going and Icahn is my final decision.

There's no housing for Master's students, unfortunately, so it'll have to be apartments. I'm not familiar with any of the neighborhoods in New York, so I don't know. I've been told Harlem is also a good place to look. Apparently now it's much more safer and trendier than what people are made to believe. I would hope to work at least part-time when I'm in New York. I have to eat somehow!

Hello everyone,

I'm from the Boston area and although I'm only a four hour bus ride from NYC I have not started to really look for housing yet. Most of my preliminary search has been through Craigslist, but it is hard to distinguish what's legit, unless you actually go and see the apartments. I am not very familiar with the different neighborhoods in NYC, so I can't really make a preliminary judgment on them. But I was told Sunnyside area has reasonable priced rentals. I would be open to room with people from MSSM, but I would need enough space to set a home office as I will be telecommuting to my current job.

Is anyone going to the open house in June??

trying to get my medical/vaccination history from my undergrad school has been a bitch ugh

Did you try getting that info retrieve from your medical records at your doctor's office? Schools usually share vaccine records with your PCP's office (at least mine did)

I guess I'm the only one who carries a copy of her vaccination records on her phone? For some immunizations, vaccination records aren't enough. You need titers to prove your immunity. I had to go to my PCP and get a bloodwork order. That was awful. I learned I don't take well to getting blood drawn. :(

For me, everything is now complete. Just waiting for a response from financial aid. Oy.

I dont have a regular PCP that I visit. I literally only go to the doctors office to get physicals lol. And Im not on my parents insurance, I usually have insurance through school but im not in school atm. So any current doc visits are out of pocket

also, does anyone wanna make a facebook group? So we can help each other along the moving process :D

Facebook won't let me create a group without adding members from my friends list, and I don't know anyone on my Facebook attending. I tried. If someone else is up to it, PM me for my Facebook I guess.

I talked to dale and he said almost all of it would be covered by loans if you apply, idk if that helps but he said that the stafford eligibility is $34,389 with gradplus covering the remainder

Yup I got the same response. He even sent me a pdf of the approximate expenditure and what the loans would cover per term.

So the loans will pretty much cover everything? and when do we get the actual award letter in the mail?

Yeah pretty much, however it will depend on what FAFSA says you're eligible for as well. I have not gotten an official letter yet, but a rough draft of what my award would look like.

Dale Fuller (Director of Student Services/Fin Aid), dale.fuller@mssm.edu . He mentioned financial aid would be awarded sometime in June. Again, I haven't got anything official from him yet.

I haven't gotten anything official either but he said we can submit stuff even in august cause classes don't start until sept 2 (if I end up going for sure I'll probably submit it sooner than that)

Apparently there's gonna be a campus tour with this month's info session. I really wish I could go. I'm gonna be in New York the last week of July. Does anyone wanna meet up and explore the campus and the surrounding areas?
