Teaching while completing Pre SLP courses?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I am currently a classroom teacher, and hope to apply for grad school this winter for the Fall 2015 application cycle. During this coming school year, I will be taking my pre-requisite classes online. I know that once I begin grad school, I will not be able to work, but I'm curious if it is feasible to teach this year while completing my pre-reqs? Any former teachers out there with any insight or advice? Thanks in advance!

Just curious.  May I ask where you are taking your pre reqs?  I'm not a teacher, but I have a part time business and my 2 year old son to look after.  I too am wondering if it can all be done.

I am also a teacher (special education)! I will be taking online pre reqs at Utah State beginning this fall, and I was advised to take only two classes at time to make the workload more manageable. This does mean, however, that I will be taking two years to complete the post back program which is 12 course. I am trying to maintain a 4.0 without burning myself out, and I feel I will get more out of my classes if I am able to focus on only two at a time.

How many courses are you taking, and how many do you need to take? If you are planning on fitting it all into a year, you might need to take on a heavier course load each team.

I am looking at USU and a few other places, I know with USU I can customize my course schedule which would be great. I am not planning to a complete an entire 2nd bachelor's, I was going to take the classes I need to get into the schools I plan on applying to (about 8 classes). I would prefer to complete all of my courses in one year (fall, spring, summer) if possible so that I can apply for graduate school for Fall 2015. There is another program that offers 4 courses in the fall, and 4 courses in the spring. Just wanted to hear what others have experienced!

What is the other program that offers 4 courses in the Fall and 4 in the Spring?  I am having a tough time deciding between USU, La Salle, and Univ of Wisconsin Eau Claire.  ENMU program also looks good, but 8 week classes intimidate me.

I was a classroom teacher while taking classes at Utah State.  I would definitely advise only taking two classes per semester while teaching. However, if you're not working in the summer, you can take more classes then.  I took five classes one semester while I wasn't working and I found it to be manageable.  Let me know if you have any other questions about taking classes while teaching! :)

I'd also recommend only taking two classes a term, maybe three maximum. I'm a FT teacher and have a PT job as well, and while simultaneously taking two classes in the spring term I found myself having to dedicate nearly all my free time to studying to maintain a 4.0.
