littlegrey Posted August 20, 2014 Share Posted August 20, 2014 This might be a bit early, but Is anyone else applying to Historic Preservation programs for fall of 2015? I'm considering UVa, Clemson, Columbia and UPenn. (The last two are probably out of reach financially, barring really good funding). I'm also considering the University of Oregon program-I'm finishing up my undergrad here in Eugene, but I really want to move to the East Coast. Any opinions on a dual planning/HP masters? Is UVa the best school for this? My ideal program would be planning centric with courses/research on social theory of preservation, and also have a studio component/field work. A lot of programs seem to have similar coursework, so it's hard to tell what sets them apart, and unfortunately I can't make it out east to visit individual programs. What schools are you all considering? How are you deciding where to apply? I had been looking at SCAD, but after reading these forums (even though I'm brand new here), I've been deterred from that idea. However, I'd like to stay on the west coast if possible -- so looking at UO and USC, as well as University of Colorado. Obviously, from those, I'll probably have to do whatever is the most feasible financially. But some places have pretty decent aid packages, too! I like what I've seen of the program and I just moved to Austin so it would be fantastic if I could stay here for a while. I'm not sure I'm really willing to move for grad school right now. I agree with you, littlegrey, I can't tell exactly what a lot of the programs entail. I don't really want to be scraping paint chips off of buildings, I'm much more interested in planning/urban cultural resources. There's a ton of gentrification going on in Austin right now so I think this town would be a great place to study cultural loss. I'm interested in architectural conservation (I do want to be scraping paint chips off buildings )and I live in NYC so it's kind of the only option. I'm trying to put something together rather last minute but I don't have a design background. Does it strengthen an application to include a portfolio if it is optional?
