Trying to decide on programs, would appreciate your advice.

Hello, TGC! I'm really new.

I'm graduating a year early (because I don't plan on paying a year's tuition for two classes), and I do really want to go to grad school for Biomathematics or Mathematical Biology.

So, without further ado;

White Female, 20, NC Resident

cGPA: 3.295 (which is going up, I promise)

Math GPA: 3.579

Classes completed: Calc I (, Calc II and III (A's), Probability and Stats I (A), Probability and Stats II ©, History of Math (A).

Currently taking: A trifecta; Linear Algebra, Modern Algebra, and Advanced Stat Methods.

GRE: 158V/161Q on a practice test from Kaplan without studying. I'm going to crank it out and probably take it in October or November.

ECs: I have research related to my History of Math class and I'm currently writing something up in the hopes I can be published. I presented at a symposium my college holds last year and was invited to do it again this year. I may end up president of the Math/ITS club this year, and I was a founding member of the quiz bowl team.

LoRs: The Math department is small where I'm at, so the professors know me. I think I can get solid letters from three of them here.

Programs I'm considering: NCSU, Duke (it's a stretch), UNC-CH, UF, and FSU right now.

So, what do you think? Am I screwed? Should I get a master's first? Thanks for reading!

Do you have any biology or computer science classes? Those would definitely be useful. You have enough math classes for the biomath programs but your class load still looks light for a math major since I don't see real analysis or math modeling or anything. Are these in the couple classes left that you still have to take? Modeling would definitely be a good class to take if you are interested in biomath. Also, do you have any idea what you want to research? For example, infectious disease or more of anatomy related modeling?

 

I think you have a shot at schools like NCSU and FSU. Some other schools you might want to look at: UC Davis, Univ of Delaware, and Ohio State. I considered getting into biomath for a while, before heading more towards biophysics. These were some of the schools that I had looked at. I cant remember if each actually had a biomath department or if you would just apply to regular math department but I do remember that all of them had lots of PIs doing biomath reserach.

Anatomy related modeling sounds more appealing to me.

I've decided to take the fourth year here; math majors here in general don't have a lot of extra classes. I could take analysis, though.

I have credit for Basic Biology, both semesters of General Chemistry, and I got a C in Organic I.

I'm currently in Programming I, and I'm thinking of taking more of them.
