Getting rather confused Sure. 5 pages sounds like a lot, but by the end of it - once you've addressed all the points they ask you to address - it's a bit cramped. Starts with a synopsis (abstract) for the proposed research. No different than the typical conference or paper abstract, I did not address cultural matters, etc... They ask you to complete a timeline for the program - I extended mine out to include post-program reporting and a timeframe for publication. Combined, these two took about 1 page. (1/5) My introduction includes my lit review, hypotheses/predictions, and intros my study species (I'm biology, so obviously this will vary by field). This section took 1 page. (2/5) Page 3 is largely consumed by methodology - important to note that methods were kept relatively vague. You will likely NOT have space to get into the details, depending on the size/scope of your project. Mine is so broadly described that my academic (not host) adviser came to me shortly before submitting, worried that I was too lacking in detail - it wasn't an issue. Over the last two pages, I have a number of smaller sections - Animal Use Procedures (may omit or replace with IRB discussions, field dependent), Host researcher bio and list of relevant pubs demonstrating suitability as host, Mutual benefits to myself and the hosts, Host Institution capabilities (suitability as a host center), Expected Value of host Country, and Statement of my qualifications to conduct international research (i.e., none, but that this will further my career). I've also got a short line at the end that my academic adviser will write a LOR and has no conflicts of interests with my proposed host. A number of these sections will be longer or shorter for you, and I intended to tweak mine based on last year's panel reviews. Many of these sections, at least in the last two pages, are explicitly requested in the handbooks, so make sure you're following their requests in the documentation on the website. I believe the biographical sketch is suppose to be a CV. Here is a portion of the solicitation from the program website: Biographical Sketch (Curriculum Vitae): Provide a 2-page CV that includes your academic background, previous appointments, past research experience, previous international experience, a list of publications, and/or other pertinent information (e.g., awards, skills, and abilities) you consider relevant to determining your overall suitability for receiving an EAPSI fellowship. Your CV needs to explain clearly what graduate program you are enrolled in, what degree you seek, projected graduation date, and where you are in the process of earning the degree. List any Responsible Conduct of Research training you have had. If you are a prior EAPSI Fellow, indicate the year and location of Fellowship experience and provide a short paragraph on results of your past EAPSI support. The biographical sketch should include only your professional information; do not include personal information, such as birthdate, marital status, etc. You may use the format described in the Grant Proposal Guide at http://www.nsf.gov/publications/pub_summ.jsp?ods_key=gpg or a format of your choosing as long as it does not exceed the 2-page limit. I initially thought it was just a straight CV, but other fellowships have the other more essayish background/personal parts, and I overthought it as I'm wont to do. For the 2014 applications, the reviews panels will be held in as 1-2 day panels throughout January 2015 (see below for the specific dates). Alumni of the EAPSI and GRFP programs and scientists and engineers with international research experience tend to be excellent reviewers. We will compile a list of potential reviewers and finalize invitations later this month for our January panels. We also hope to be able to call on your expertise in upcoming years for this annual program. Your information will be kept on file, and you might be contacted for other programs such as Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide (GROW). 2015 EAPSI Review Panels 1. Biological Sciences (BIO) January 6-7, in persson or virtual participation 2. Engineering (ENG) January 8-9 , in person or virtuall participation 3. Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences; Education and Human Development (SBE & EHR) January 12, in person or virtuall participation 4. Geological Sciences (GEO) January 13, in person or virtual particcipation 5. Mathematical and Physical Sciences, i.e., Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Astronomy, Materials Science (MPS) January 15-16, in pperson or virtual participation 6. Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) January 20 virtual only Panels will be conducted in person at NSF (Ballston section of Arlington, VA) or virtually using WebEx (Internet connection and telephone will be required to participate virtually). We will ask each panelist to review and provide written comments on approximately 15 proposals prior to the panel meeting.
