Canadian MA applicants - Fall 2015

I am applying for History; Dalhousie, UVic, Tri-University History Program (Wilfred Laurier, Waterloo, Guelph), as well as UBC (maybe...)

I am (assumingly) also new to the application process. I have read "Graduate School Admissions Essays: Write Your Way into Graduate School" by Donald Asher, as well as "Graduate School: Winning Strategies for Getting In" by Dave G. Mumby. I am always searching for advice, so if you want to exchange cv's, sop's, or even want some advice, I am willing to help (although I am an undergrad who has not actually applied yet).

Atlantic Canadian history :) My MA thesis is going to focus on the Mi'kmaq in colonial Nova Scotia. My undergraduate thesis I'm working on now is much more modern, though. I'm looking at the Canso Causeway and its economic and social impacts on the Stait Area of Cape Breton.

What's your research area?

Modern German history, I want to examine the evolution of Communism in East Germany between the Stalinist and post-Stalinist periods. I am not sure how well of a fit my topic is with my chosen POI at Dalhousie! My research area is more suited to some POI's from Guelph and UVic, but who knows what could happen.

I went to Nova Scotia last summer and absolutley loved it! I spent time on Cape Breton Island and in Halifax. So beautiful. Good luck on your applications and let me know when you hear from Dalhousie, and I will do the same! :)

That sounds really interesting! Hopefully you'll hear back from all of the universities you applied to soon, and good luck! I'll definitely let you know when I hear from Dalhousie.

And Nova Scotia is pretty beautiful :) Halifax is an awesome spot to live.

Any other Canadian MA applicants out there?

Not Canadian here, but applying to graduate schools in Canada after doing my undergrad at UOttawa. I applied to UVic, UBC Okanagan, UNBC and UOttawa in Indigenous Governance/Indigenous Studies/First Nations Studies/Anthropology.

Those programs sound awesome! What's your thesis going to focus on?

Thank you! What I would love to do in terms of research would be to look at how pipelines impact Indigenous communities (on a cultural, social level), and what are the Indigenous reactions and alternatives in terms of protection of the environment and economic development in British Columbia. What about you?

I'm from Mexico and looking to apply for MA in Social and Political Thought at York. Does anyone have an idea of how hard it is to get admitted?

Dunno if this is appropriate or not [u.S. applicant applying for MA to Canadian school] but still waiting to hear back from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby B.C.

Their criminology program has a lot of what I'm looking for in terms of crime mapping and such, can't wait to hear if I was accepted or rejected.
