USC MSW admissions/Those who are applying or were accepted before?

Hello all! :)

I currently submitted my application for the early admission deadline for USC. USC has been my top choice since forever, so if I get in, I am going 100 percent.

Here are my stats:

I am currently finishing up my bachelor of social work with a 3.4 GPA. My social work GPA is 3.5

I have an internship with children, as well as volunteer for a hospice (my calling). I work part time, teach a class at church, am vice president of the sociology club on campus, as well as am a mentor for commuter students on campus.I also run a ministry at church.

I wrote my personal statement about my schizophrenic father, my hospice patients, and internship kids, and my drive to be a social worker.

I applied early, so when might I find out if I got in? What do you think my chances are?

Also, others whom are applying should comment below so we can help each other :)

I also applied there for the early decision deadline! My hope is that applying early will give me a greater chance getting in and maybe even getting a scholarship, so if that is the case, I will definitely go too! I posted my stats in another thread :)

The website says we will receive a decision by early January; however, since you will have a BASW, doesn't that mean you are an advanced standing applicant?

I do, but I do not attend a university accredited by the CSWE. So while I am getting a BSSW (here its a science degree), I cannot apply advanced standing. But that's fine by me!

It seems to me like you have a good chance then! (Or at least a better chance than me) Since not only do you have social work related experience, but also an academic background in social work!

Daniela, it sounds like you have great chances of getting accepted. I think this a great thread to start for others who have applied to USC. I applied to their advanced standing program. I'm nervous as to when we'll hear anything back for sure.

Has anybody heard anything about USC MSW scholarships? Last time I asked, they told me over the phone that the application will be available in December, but I haven't received any sort of email or notification to apply. I'm interested in applying for a few scholarships including the Dean's Leadership Scholarship. Does anybody know how we can access the application, if it is available?

@adacot I believe there are applications available online now. I'm not sure about the Dean's scholarship, but I do know some applications have the option to apply now.

So if it helps, I applied last year and received my letter of acceptance from USC around february or early march through snail mail. In regards to scholarships, USC is notoriously cheap and refused to offer me any amount of grants(mind you I come from a very impoverished background, so the idea of need-based grants are out the window with them.) I ended up saying no to USC and saying yes to U Penn, but here are my stats:

GPA: 3.42 from UC Berkeley(anthro)

GRE: 162(Verbal), 144(Math), 4.5(Writing)

3 years part time volunteer work

Worked full time throughout college to support myself

Grew up with severely mentally ill single mother

As you can see, I didnt have the greatest GRE score or GPA but I still got into UC Berkeley. UCLA, U Michigan, USC, U Penn, etc. So do not worry too much about the numbers and focus on showing your passion for social work and learning more about the part of the field that interests you most!!

Have you found out if you got into USC? I applied for the early admission deadline as well.

I have not heard back, but seeing as how the scholarship application deadline was January 5, I doubt that they will release decisions by early January as stated on their website since they seem to notify scholarship recipients "at time of admission," meaning they would need time to read the scholarship applications too....but I'm not sure, I'm anxiously waiting as well....

USC: How many students are accepted?

We enroll approximately 525 new students in the MSW program each fall across all four of our locations.

UCLA: How many students are admitted to the MSW program annually?  What percentage of applicants are admitted?

The Department admits approximately 100 students to the MSW program each year. This is about 20-25% of the applicant pool.

I think its important to note that these statistics may be referring to the number of applicants that actually decide to attend that school, not the number of acceptances sent out....also the size of the applicant pool is not provided. I recall seeing on petersons.com a while back that the admit rate for USC was around 75%, but I am not sure how reliable that site is, and now it seems the information for USC's on campus MSW program is gone from that website (maybe USC Social Work requested/paid the website to take that information down?). Also, assuming the information on petersons.com is correct, the admit rate of UCLA's MSW program is 40%.

I heard that a lot of people will not hear back until February or March due the massive amount of people who are applying to MSW programs this year. Yikes!

did you also apply? I'm thinking about just calling them at the end of janruary just to see.

same here just found out today got the book scholarship also

yes! $800?

I also got another scholarship, but in that email it says "In the event that you also receive the Dean’s Leadership Scholarship, Yellow Ribbon award, CalSWEC, IUC or GSWEC stipend, the MSW Scholarship will be rescinded." So I am confused as to where this scholarship is coming from....

so I received an acceptance from USC as well, but I'm a little confused because it says on the acceptance email that I applied to the nov 3 deadline even though I definitely didn't submit my application until dec 1. I should call, right? especially since they want me to make a decision by 1/30 and I was not prepared to do that
