Unbelievable behavior from department

So i recently applied to the University of New Mexico last week for the Pharmacy program and just yesterday i decided to peruse the website only to see a notice that the department is currently having not going to take any student for fall 2015 because there's no space for incoming student.

This message is coming a week to the priority deadline stated on their website.

Its so painful looking back at how stressful that application was, needless to say it was very expensive as well.

Is such unprofessionalism even acceptable?? Who regulates these things?

Why should a school announce such a decision a week to the deadline>>

That totally sucks. I was curious so I checked their website and found only one pharma program stating they were at capacity.  If that is the one, and what you write is true, I would file a formal complaint.  I'd also request a refund.

Yikes - I see it - it's the PEPPOR program. 

I would definitely ask (demand, really) for a refund of the application fee.

 

Also, it might behoove you to look into what happened. Did they expect some folks to graduate who did not? If not, why aren't students meeting their graduation deadlines? Or, is something going on with management/administration? Are they shrinking? Are they not meeting their own internal deadlines for some things?

Seems a faculty member left unexpectedly

That's no excuse however.

I'm demanding a refund.

I get the frustration, but I don't get how this is unprofessional. 

 

Something happened that made the program unable to take students. They notified students of this as soon as they knew. That's a professional move, not an unprofessional move. 

 

A university can't plan in advance for a faculty member leaving unexpectedly. 

 

I suppose they could have admitted all of the prospective graduate students and then told you there was no one to work with? That would be truly unprofessional behavior.

Seeing as I have a (somewhat) insider perspective, I can tell you that the admissions process is going through some changes which may have caused some confusion when it came to sending out notices and such. 

However, they should refund the application fee if they aren't taking applicants.  Just a tip, don't demand.  Politely request.  Don't burn bridges.

Exactly.

 

At my school fees are NOT refundable. That is the risk you take when you apply. Buck up kiddo.
