Good masters programs to apply to?

Hello all!

I'd like to apply to a couple of masters programs, largely as back up. I am pretty picky, as I have some full time work lined up in case I don't get into a PhD also, which may end up being preferable to a masters. So I'm looking for a program that does not have a PhD program attached to the school (so that I'm more likely to be funded, I have no money) in a fairly metropolitan area. My research is in identity formation in pediatrics starting with gender.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

SUNY Buffalo would be a decent fit for your interests, is somewhat city-like, and offers the possibility of funding/scholarships for MA students. However, I'd guess that PhD students receive most funding and most opportunities, given that it is an R1 school. It's also not very highly ranked, but it would be a decent back up.

University of Houston. I did not pay a dime and Houston is affordable. Great, well known faculty and they're bringing in younger, up-and-coming people. They are always looking to improve the program and the student to faculty ration is small. They also have strong ties to Houston for research or if you're interested in applied sociology, it's a great place to be.

You should look into Brandeis University's MA program. I think your research would be a good fit there. It is partially funded, but if you TA you get a tuition waiver and stipend.

I know two people who were defunded at Brandeis so I've been avoiding it.

I figured I should share where I ended up applying to a masters to as it might be helpful for other. Umass Boston has a great MA that tuition waved, most likely paid, and had a strong concentration in medical sociology. It's a relief to have found it and the deadline is March!
