Fall 2015: Which subfield are you applying to?

My focus is in culture and stratification with a focus on religion and race/ethnicity. Did anyone else have a hard time finding areas of sociology that they are not interested in? The only subfields I couldn't see myself being interested in are economic sociology and environmental (not that those aren't great subfields; they just aren't for me).

I had the same problem. I'm not terribly interested in gender/sexuality, crime, the environment, or medical sociology, but I had a hard time narrowing my SoP beyond that. I'm interested in stratification, economic sociology, culture/religion, and somewhat interested in rural issues.

I applied to programs in Marxist sociology, political economy, social movements and globalization. Even more specifically, I applied to study issues surrounding water (water justice, conflicts, movements, etc). I hope I wasn't *too* narrow!

I'm actually doing my master's thesis on newspaper coverage of fracking in regards to concerns about water contamination. We should chat. Feel free to PM me.  :)

Good luck to you, Hydra. I applied to 3 of your schools too and did my undergrad at Oberlin, back in the day. Am also applying for Marxism, but more in addition to development, focused on primitive accumulation in some schools and labor in some others.

Gender studies, popular culture, and sociology of aging.  The last one is a bit of a reach, as neither of the programs I apply to really deal with it very much.  I think my sweet spots lie in the intersections between them.  How the elderly navigate different aspects of popular culture for example.
