Canadian Counselling Psychology Programs

Hi all,

Just thought it might be nice to start a thread about Canadian counselling psych programs (updates, admission, etc.). What programs did everyone apply to? I'm currently going through the notorious self-doubt stage and attempting to google last year's "admission averages" for Western and Ottawa U - keeping my fingers crossed that my grades are high enough and I have enough experience!

I applied to the MA in Educational Counselling at uOttawa is that the one you're talking about? I called the education dept and they said takes 4-6 weeks sometimes 8 so we'll probably hear back by mid March! Which program at uOttawa did you apply for?

Yup! That's the one, same with Western. I'm so anxious to hear back!! I heard through a friend they're taking around 60 for uOttawa and 18 or so for Western. Not totally sure if that's accurate...18 is pretty slim! Haha

For uottawa most of those 60 are M.ed students not MA students they only take maybe 20 MA students per year depending on which supervisors are available that year. I know this year a few of the profs are on sabatical or can't take on another student.

Ya usually around an 80-85% is usually sufficient they say you need at least a 75% but knowing that a lot of people apply I highly doubt anyone with lower than an 80 would get in but you need an 85% to get an entrance scholarship if that's something you were looking into.

I'm a current student in Western's MA Counselling program. They're accepting 15 students this year and hoping to schedule interviews soon for sometime in March. Not 100% sure on admissions averages, but somewhere between 80-85 sounds about right. Western's program heavily weights practical experience though, so someone with a lower GPA but great experience in the field still stands a chance.

Thanks so much for your insight - that's really good to know, especially that Western weights practical experience pretty heavily. Unfortunately my GPA isn't as high as I would like so I'm hoping I'm not out of the running.

I applied to Alberta, Calgary and OISE for counselling. I'm wondering if anyone has heard anything at all from UAlberta? Also, I interviewed with Calgary but haven't heard yet... any news there?

Thanks for starting this thread!  I applied to Western and McGill.  So far I have an interview with my POI at McGill, but no word from Western.  Fingers crossed!

Ken, what stream did you apply to at McGill?

Western has already made their phone calls for interviews  :( I didn't get one, official acceptances/rejections will be going out around the end of March. Still hoping to hear back from Ottawa u! I'm not too sure about McGill unfortunately.
