Recommended Posts

Hello Guys,

I have got an admit for MSW for Fall 2015 in University of Pittsburgh.

I would love to connect with everyone who have got admit from it. I request Seniors to give input on how's Social work program in Pittsburgh?

Hi! Congrats on your admissions! Are you applying anywhere else?

Hi! I got into Pitt. Have to let em know by March 15th to get the scholarship money. Feel like its not enough time! What have ppl heard about the school? I am interested in doing to Clinical route and am not sure its the right fit for that or not. Right now deciding between Pitt (new place which is fun, but lower rank) and UNC (hometown, so boring, but ranked higher) and I feel like I can't decide! Any advice or insight would be wonderful!!

@ceapa421: Congrats to you too :), ummm..still deciding between others schools, actually awaiting scholarship decision as i haven't received an official mail as of yet. What about you?...I have also applied to couple of MFT programs relying on SDSU Ms in counselling with concentration on marriage and family therapy. Actually would like you to enlighten me regarding which is more employable MSW or MFT?

@tlove11: Actually I have applied to only university of pitt for MSW, can you tell me some more good schools which have deadline remaining, and actually i didnt applied to penn and u of michigan due to financial constraints, fees is too high :(

@hla003: If you don't mind can you tell me what was your scholarship amount? and did you receive decision regarding scholarship in your official packet or on portal decision itself? Even i am interested the clinical route and would love to know more about the school, how is the faculty and curriculum and internship scenario. I desperately want funding, but i dunno if il get one or not because i applied 3 days after priority deadline and my GPA is 3.67.

Hey! So I think the only reason I got the funding because I applied before the priority deadline and they basically guarantee you'll get some funding. Otherwise, I don't think I would get one (myy gpa was 3.5). I got 5,000/semester, which I think is pretty generous. Sounds like other people got the same or a bit higher.

Some other good programs who have deadlines around March 1st are Washington University in St. Louis, USC, University of Chicago and I'm sure there are some other schools. Haha yes I totally understand, that was the reason why I didn't apply to the Universiyt of Washington.

Yeah I received $8,000 per semester! I'm just wondering if they also have need based scholarships. I know they have a integrated mental health stipend for $18,000 but I'm interested in Child Welfare :( !

Wow that's awesome! Congrats! I was just under 3.4 GPA and they said I wasn't eligible for any scholarship at all - they were really stringent on the 3.4 to even be considered... which was a little frustrating since I have several years of work and field experience.  Oh well.  It sounds like there isn't need based, only merit based, unfortunately... but I could be wrong.

Wowww...that sounds like a huge amount of funding...congrats on that :). I dunno how stringent they are regarding the deadline thing because theresa told me that scholarships after deadline would be on a chance basis. If money is left then only they would provide scholarships. I am just hoping that some miracle happens and i get one *Fingers Crossed*.

I am interested in mental health so how do I apply for stipend?

Hi everyone,

I just joined this thread because today I was accepeted to Pitt's MSW- Advanced standing program. I want to hear what people have to say about the school and things as such. I also applied to Columbia, NYU, and Millersville. And I am still waiting to hear back from the rest of the schools.

I also had one problem. I could not find the link to the FAAS form for financial aid. I beleieve this has to be submitted before we recieve our financial aid package.

I visited Pitt a week ago and Theresa said that the FAAS for this year was not yet available.  Not sure how we can make March 15 decisions without that...

What did you like most about your visit? :)

I loved having the chance to meet some professors, staff, and students.  I'm interested in COSA and there was a really good representation of both COSA and direct practice at the event I went to.  The Cathedral of Learning is beautiful and I really liked the city of Pittsburgh as a whole.   Have you visited - or do you plan to?

Thank you for the link, i saw that on website but i guess one cannot apply before the second year into the program, when one has to choose specializations.

Did visits lean people towards going with Pitt? I was never invited for one. I have spent time in the city, but not the campus.

I wasn't invited for one either. I just went on my own.  It made Pitt go up in my book but I'm not sure if it made an enormous difference in the end. It just made it more tangible and gave me the opportunity to meet students and staff.

Hi Everyone!

I also was accepted to Pitt (advance standing-COSA) and received a generous amount of funding. Still not sure if I want to attend. I only applied here and one other school, because I do want to spend big $$$ on my MSW. I did visit the school about 2 weeks ago. I think the staff and students were very friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate (very important to me). They were also very personable. In fact, everyone in the area was very friendly and inviting (as a NYer, this was so different for me, but I liked it lol).

What I like about Pitt:

Low cost of living

Friendly atmosphere

Public transportation is FREE for students

Cathedral of Learning is absolutely beautiful!.... where I think most or all of our classes will be

Career Center specifically for SW program

Program seems flexible enough that you can 1. customize it to meet your specific interest/ needs 2. work part-time (super important!)

Center for Race and Social Problems....this is my ultimate interest. I personally would not want to go to any MSW program that wasn't focused on tackling core issues and working "with" our clients versus working "for" our clients....you figure out the difference.

If I have to be super honest and a little shallow (we all are). I just don't know enough about Pitt. I know it ranks fairly well (#11) but that's it. I'm not sure about its reputation and if I will be able to be taken seriously once I leave Pitt and travel to other states.

Anyone else have the same issue or other concerns? What do you guys know about the Pitt?

Hey Psycholicious_2015

I was accepted to Pitt on 12/17 and didn't receive my merit scholarship award until 2/15...it takes a while. Also I applied for advance standing, but was told that this was not guaranteed until registration time (whatever that means). I'm not sure if it makes a difference that your an international student, but then again I don't know much about that....sorry! hope this helps!

Thank you so much for all the help.

I just had a word with theresa and she told me that since i applied after priority deadline funding cannot be guaranteed, if people who do not accept the offer and leave the funding then leftover funding could be given to me. I feel really sad about this :(
