Looking for an Evaluation: PhD Geology

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Can anyone give me an indication of how my chances might be for admission to a doctoral programme in geology? I'm targeting UT Austin, Stanford, Colorado School of Mines, UW Madison, Texas A&M, and

Undergrad Institution: Foreign university (India) for undergrad, Indian Institute of Technology for postgrad (MSc.). From what I've seen on most university websites, these qualify as equivalent to a US bachelors degree.
Major(s): Applied Geology
Minor(s): None
GPA in Major: 9.75 (on a scale of 10) in post grad; 83.87% (we use percentages in undergrad here. I haven't found a universal way to convert to a GPA yet)
Overall GPA: Again, calculation confusion. I'll sort this out closer to the application date.
Position in Class: University rank 2 in undergrad, rank 1 in postgrad.
Type of Student: International male

GRE Scores (revised/old version): Haven't given it yet. Registered for May.

Research Experience: 4 month project in my MSc. Presently working part time with a professor on a project which ought to be complete by October. I haven't published. Presented a poster on research work I did at work (I'm at an oil and gas major) at an internal conference, co-author on a poster presented by a team mate at another internal conference.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Silver medalist in postgrad (my institute doesn't hand out gold medals) for ranking first in my department. Got an award for economic geology and one for being the highest ranking student after the first year of masters. A couple of scholarships during undergrad.

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I intend on applying for a PhD in petroleum geoscience and I hope my industry experience helps! I've got hands on experience in geological and geophysical studies and have been through extensive training by some well known people in the field while at my company. I've been on the job for two years now.

I'm wondering if my university list is a bit too ambitious. Grateful for comments!

I think you should target more private schools. I know UT austin, CSM and Texas A&M are known to be good for industry, but its more expensive for public schools to take an international student vs a domestic student so that is working against you.  Mind you, public schools do take international students, so still apply.

You should also contact professors in a few months to see how your research interests fit with them and see if they are taking on students that application cycle.

Those programs are fairly competitive, but you also have a strong application. You should target 320 on your GRE at least. Seeing as you were among the best students in your country, you should have the LOR to back that up. I think you will be fine.
