Online MSW

Anyone out there getting their MSW online? If I don't get accepted into FSU based on my very poor GRE scores, I will apply to some online programs. Any advice?

I'm in a distance education program. DE programs are not necessarily going to be easier to get into, though, if you're worried about your GRE scores. My university has an on campus program, as well, and DE students are held to the same standard. In fact, we actually do more work than on campus students.

 

I will say that my quantitative score was quite low, but addressed that in my statement and explained why I could still succeed in the program.

Louise86, which school are you enrolled in and why did you choose it? How many schools did you look in to?

 

I have a 4.0, strong LOR's and personal statement and I wrote an undergrad honors thesis. I am hoping that these things will outweigh my GRE scores......I am so nervous as I take the GRE on Saturday

I'm at the University of Tennessee. I chose it because it's in my state and is affordable. I actually live close to the campus, but DE just fit my circumstances better. The other student at my field placement is in the on campus program in Knoxville so we've talked a lot about the differences in each program. It's the only school I applied to because a lot of out-of-state tuition was not affordable and I wasn't willing to go into a huge amount of debt for a social work degree. I enjoy the program and feel I am learning a great deal.

 

I don't think they put a lot of weight on GRE scores, although they are required. I did well on my verbal reasoning and writing portion, but math is just not my strong area. I made sure to address that shortcoming in my statement, though, and pointed out that while I struggle with quantitative in a standardized test format, I did excel in my stat classes in undergrad.

I've applied to several online programs (Columbia, Fordham, Rutgers, USC, Simmons) The requirements for admission and degree requirements are the same whether you go online or on campus. Don't have the expectation that it'll be easier to get in or easier to complete. Make sure whatever program you apply to is accredited by CSWE, some programs aren't .

Some traditional MSW programs (e.g. Hunter) don't require you to submit GRE scores at all. If your stats are good, consider applying for Fall 2016 during the next application cycle.

I agree with ssk14.  Saint Leo did not require GRE with a specific GPA.  There is another program in Florida, I can't recall which one, that has a similar arrangement. 

 

I never hurts to do some looking around and keep your options open

I am at Indiana University online (MSW Direct) I chose it because it was the most flexible when it came to working with my work schedule for practicum rotation and did not require visits to campus.

 

 Also, as a plus they did not require GRE scores and are accredited through CSWE.

Of the 9 schools I applied to (all online programs), none of them required the GRE.  I took it, but did poorly, so was hoping that it didn't negatively affect my chances.  It didn't because I never had to submit them.  You should be fine.  Good luck!
