Tax Question for International students

Hello,

I was trying to find out how much international students get taxed..

I read about US taxes, for example if I have a 13.000$ stipend I would get taxed 10% for the 9.000$ and than 15% for the other 4.000$ + State Taxes. Is this overall correct?

But, I'm an international student and I could not find any more information on how this works for us.

If anyone can help me?

thanks

The general process to determine your federal taxes is something like:

1. Start with your stipend (e.g. $13,000)

2. If part of this stipend is used to pay for tuition or other mandatory fees, you can subtract that from (1).

3. International students can claim a "personal exemption", of around $4000. Subtract that from (2).

4. The remainder is now your taxable income. As you said, you pay 10% on the first $9000 and then 15% on the rest (unless you are making a lot of money, you won't fall into the next bracket).

State taxes follow a similar procedure and are usually much less than federal taxes.
