Southern Connecticut State MSW?

Hi Everyone,

 

I recently found out that I was accpeted into SCSU's MSW prgram for the fall of 2015!  (I'm still wating to hear back from NYU)  I've searched the forums, and tried googling around for reviews or others' experiences with program, but I'm not finding much.  I know their program is very small, but has anyone heard of, or have, any first-hand expeience with Southern? Or is anyone here planning on starting in the fall of 2015?

 

If the program is any good, It's definitely my first choice, based on the extremely low cost!

Hi Truffula! Are you from CT or the surrounding area? I was born and raised there, and I can tell you that SCSU as a whole doesn't have a great reputation for academics. I don't know anything about the MSW program, though.

I'm not from CT originally, but it's where I am now (moved here from nyc 2 years ago when the bf got a job here).

 

I'm hearing so many mixed things about Southern, and I'm unsure about attending there.  I've what little information I've heard have been good things about the MSW program though, including that they have a stong clinical program, but I'm looking for as much info as I can get! 

 

NYU is still something I'm considering (have been taking non-matric at Fordham and have not been impressed by it), but the price tag of Southern is so much less....

hi! i'm from new england and the only times i've heard of scsu's msw program is when it was being compared to uconn's. in those instances, the people i spoke to commented that uconn's program was overall much better, both in academics and field placement opportunities. if you're planning on staying in the area, i don't think it will be a huge issue. as long as it's accredited, you should be able to get a job in the area with no issues.

Hi Truffula - I got accepted as well and am planning to attend in the fall. I share your frustrations with trying to find first-hand accounts about the school. I'm a lifelong CT resident and am aware of Southern's overall reputation (which I think mostly reflects undergrad anyway), but it was the only place I applied due to financial issues plus the convenience of the location. From what I gathered, the UConn program has more of a macro focus which also factored into my decision as that's not my area. Not sure if you went to Southern's MSW open house but I was impressed with one of the professors I talked to and got an overall good vibe. They seemed to imply that they assume students will be basing their careers in CT, which worries me because I don't really want to be living here forever, but if you're here for the long haul it seems that they're quite well-connected with clinical facilities.

I'm still waiting to hear about my application to scsu and starting to panic. If you don't mind, Did you apply advanced standing or regular? Did you hear by email or mail, and when? Did the online application status change at all, because mine still says "complete ready to review". Thanks!!!!

Hi,

 

I am currently in the program. I am starting my second year. They have a weak field placement situation, to be honest. Most of my friends, and I were left to our own devices to find our first internships. I have loved some of the professors. Some not so much. That would be true of most schools though. Academically, I work hard and challenge myself to get more out of the program then what is expected of the students in general. (I entered the program with a masters degree in a different field, so I am no stranger to research). This is absolutely not expected of anyone entering the program, though. If you have more specfic questions let me know.
