It is ridiculously competitive, so congratulations! The main reason I'd want to go to the uni I would apply to is the people working there, their research resources, and that fact that studying the British Empire in England would allow for many resources I do not currently have that would prove very useful for my dissertation. I think you are onto something here. The trickiest thing about the Fulbright is making the case for a particular university or a particular country. It seems you have the reasons for the country pretty much locked up. Couple that with an articulation for the program at the university you have in mind and you could be looking at a strong project. I agree with miracle18. I think you should go for it. You already have experience writing Fulbright essays and you know what to expect from the interviewers. I had talked to my FPA from my old uni when I initially applied and she had mentioned that they just don't get as many MA applicants as they do BA, which judging from GradCafe, is definitely true. I actually applied for a grant five years ago right after undergrad, but was an alternate. Worked out for the best; I ended up going to Japan anyway under a different language program, and in subsequent years got my MA and now in my PhD. Also applying to other grant programs to do research in Japan next year, so hopefully one of them will work out. Good luck to everyone! I would have it re read a few times tweek a few sentences and such and re submit. We'll see, I have been selected as an alternate twice in a row.. so maybe my way isn't the best..lol. In fact, I found that my project was a lot more clearly articulated this time around; consequently, it could very well be the project or the way it was worded, among a variety of other possibilities. I want to apply for a research grant to Germany or Austria, but will be spending this year in Germany. I was awarded an ETA to Germany this year but turned it down for another fellowship. At the time of application I will only have 2 months there, but obviously the program is a year long, so I am not sure if they factor that in or just look at how much experience a person has in the country at the time the application is due. It actually works a little differently for graduate students as opposed to graduating seniors from what I've seen (at least for Japan). I actually have several friends who have received Fulbrights to Japan who have spent considerable time there; one who was on JET for three or four years and has done several extended research trips in the past, another who has had several research trips and was in Japan on a year-long language program at time of application. In my case, I have 11 months total experience in the country between 7 months of language school (should have been 10 but I was there for 3/11 so it was cut short) and two 2-month research trips, which in the grand scheme of things isn't much at all. If I were currently doing research in Japan, I'd be ineligible, and this one discourages first-timers to Japan. (Country page lists in the description for the graduate student grant that non-specialists for Japanese studies and first-timers for Japan have to prove the feasibility of their project since they won't have the language or resources of specialists or those who have spent time in the country.) That said, I do think it was to my advantage when I applied as a graduating senior that I had no prior experience in the country. (I was an alternate when I applied in 2010-2011.) But for graduate students applying (at least for Japan), I think it's fairly rare to have someone who has not spent some time in the country. Fulbright has the Student Fulbright (ETA) or the Fulbright Scholar program where professionals or those who have been working for at least 5 years apply.
