Americans at foreign universities NOT on federally approved list?

Hello,

I did my research, but the websites I read were outdated. I applied to the University of Alberta's MPH (professional) and was accepted, however now I may not be able to go. From what I read online, Americans attending the University of Alberta could take out private loans in the U.S. in order to attend. Numerous websites stated that fact.

However, after being accepted, I found this information.

"Through ongoing policy reviews based on requirements of the United States William D. Ford Direct Loan Program, the University of Alberta no longer participates in the Direct Loan Program.

The University of Alberta also does not participate in private lending programs (e.g. Sallie Mae) or Veterans' Affairs G.I. Bill funding. Since the 2013/2014 academic year, University of Alberta students are not eligible to receive funding via these programs.

The University of Alberta will continue to sign deferment forms. If you have a deferment form requiring signature, please contact Student Connect for further instruction."

I have contacted numerous private banks here in the U.S. and no bank will loan me money. If I had chosen Simon Fraser or practically any other university in Canada or the UK, they would give me money. So I called the U of A and they said that as of this year, ALL American students have to pay cash up front or rely on internships and bursars.

This is not for all Canadian universities, just this one in particular. I wish I had found this tidbit before applying.

Any hints anyone as to how I can get a loan? I am going to apply for as much funding as possible, but I'm pretty sure I'll need a small loan at least.

Thanks!
