Venting my frustrations

Recommended Posts

This whole application process has been frustrating enough, but what happened two days ago just sent me over the edge.

I woke up to a voicemail from University of South Carolina's distance program asking me to call them back. I did and they asked me if I was still interested in their program. I said yes and they offered me a place in their program! (I was on the waitlist) I was over the moon and I accepted on the spot. I literally danced around my house because I had pretty much accepted that I wasn't going to get in anywhere at this point. Then about half an hour later they called back and told me that never mind, they couldn't accept me because I haven't taken a statistics and chemistry/physics course.

Um, are you kidding me? I understand having that as a prerequisite, but seriously you didn't check to make sure I fulfilled all the requirements before offering me admission??? So disorganized and careless. Heartbreaking.

Thanks for reading my rant. I just needed to vent.

Please feel free to vent your own frustrations about the application process here.

Also, has anyone heard from Eastern New Mexico University? I applied there but I'm worried they didn't get my application. It required being sent over email and the first time I sent it they told me the attachment didn't work, so I sent it using a new format and they never replied. I assumed that meant it worked but now I'm worried....

Strange, usually if you need prereqs you get a conditional admit on the condition you complete your prereqs by the end of the first year.

Or even better, schools like NCSU have prereqs for graduate study but it isn't like you need 10/10. They just look at your experience and if you cover most of it (say 8/10), it is good enough for admission. But to deny someone outright when they could just take the prereqs their first semester? Maybe because it is Distance Education and not on campus?

I only had one school that said I needed to take any prereq classes (as mentioned, by the end of the first year), but I quickly said no to that offer since 1. I already took similar classes during my BS, and 2. Higher ranked schools already accepted me without conditions.

You should ask them if they can accept you if you take the required courses this summer! those will be offered at community colleges

I did but apparently the program starts in the summer, June 1 :( And they said the courses have to be completed by June 1

Oh my gosh I'm so sorry for you. That's cruel to promise a future and then take it away. Is that even allowed? I would be devastated if I was in your position and I think you should get in touch with someone higher up because that's unacceptable to do to a person. You can't take back an acceptance after you call someone and tell them they got in!! I really would speak to someone. Sorry that you are going through this!

Also I'm pretty sure a college forgot about my app bc it appears that everyone else has heard. I contacted them and they said they sent a letter out that day (weeks after everyone else) so pretty fishy to me but idk how to prove it..

I am so sorry - that is beyond f'd us! Definitely call, and speak with someone and if they can't help you speak with their supervisor, and then their supervisor and beyond until you settle this in some reasonable manner. Those are the ASHA requirements which are required for certification after graduation - so technically they should be allowed to be taken over a summer or winter while you're in school.  See if they will agree to that. Extremely unprofessional on their part - you shouldn't have to deal with this.

I would call them back and ask if you could try CLEP/DSST testing (can't remember which has the exam) out of the stats requirement at the very least. Stats is one of those classes where it's pretty easy to self-study. I basically did that during my 1st UG degree because the class was taught by a grad student whose accent was so strong that nobody could understand him. Khan Academy has loads of videos on the subject: https://www.khanacademy.org/math/probability

The Cartoon Guide to Statistics is a great reference guide as well.

Chemistry/Physics is something you could try testing out as well, but it would almost certainly take longer than June 1st to learn.

Replying to your question about ENMU. It sounds like they didn't get your application. I had a problem submitting mine also. After I resubmitted it I got an email saying it worked. I got a letter in March saying that I was on the wait list and just found out today that I got in. I'm sorry you've had some really frustrating things happen to you. I'll say I have also had my fair share of devastating things happen to me during the many times I've applied, so I understand how you're feeling. Hang in there!
