Internship

Hi,

So, I've been viewing this forum for months now, checking things out, and I finally decided to make an account! I got accepted in January to attend Wayne State University for  my MSW in Fall 2015. I'm not sure how it works for other schools, but at Wayne we have two internships, a different placement each school year. Now, I'm in the process of getting placed at an agency. I was told when Wayne places students, they only place so many so there is less competition and that way it is less likely to need to replace students. So I was under the impression I just needed to not screw up the interview and I'd have the internship spot. I just recently had my interview, and at the end they told me they had other student candidates to interview, and they would let me know their final decision once they interviewed the other candidates. I'm freaking out a little now. This agency is exactly what I want, and as a first year student it's one of the harder places to get placed at. I thought I had gotten lucky by going in and figuring out my internship early. I don't know how many interns they take or how worried I should be. I'm worried if I don't get this placement there will be very few places left to pick from and I won't be happy about where I end up getting placed.

Anyone have any experience with this or stories to tell to help ease my worry? Thanks!

For MSW programs, you are never guaranteed an internship at a specific place. You have to apply just like everyone else, although your school will help you (this is what they mean by "place"). You WILL have a field placement if you don't screw things up, which you likely won't.

I would go into it with an open mind. My undergraduate placement of working within homelessness was something I never imagined myself doing, but now it's the only area of social work I think I will ever do!

I understand that no placement is guaranteed. I guess my worry is more so because I am only allowed to interview at one place at a time. I won't find out their decision until mid-May, and if they reject me I have to start over. Since they have been placing people since February, I feel there will be few places left to pick from. I think the interview went well, but still. I was told they only place the number of people that the agency is willing to take, so finding out my placement isn't certain now is frustrating. I'm just stressed about the whole thing. I'm going to try to keep an open mind, but until May comes along I'm going to be worried about it. Lol
