What can I do to improve my chances of acceptance?

Recommended Posts

I have been stressing out lately about applying to graduate programs this coming fall.  I am taking my GRE for the first time in 2 weeks (I plan on taking it again in the early fall) and have been prepping for them for the past month and a half by studying 4-5 hours a day.  I have a solid GPA (3.75) and have first hand experience in the field (I am an individual who stutters and still go to therapy for it). Hopefully, that first hand experience will help aid me in getting accepted. I have little volunteer experience besides volunteering/helping in a classroom last year and being a part of my school's NSSLHA program.  Besides trying for more volunteer work this fall, is there anything else that I could do to help improve my chances of acceptance into a grad program?   Thank you.

Make sure that you found reliable recommenders for your LORs and some SLP faculty for those programs who need that as a requirement. A good LOR from someone who knows your skills and potential in a positive light really will take you far. Some profs will not write more than a few recs for a student so make sure you find someone ASAP.

Also, it would be good to start on your personal statement if you have not begun to do so. Taking breaks between writing and multiple revisions really helps. You might end up with a different piece from what you had in the beginning.
