UCLA Applicant 2016 (HELP)

Recommended Posts

I am applying to the MSW programs at UCLA, University of Michigan & Chicago, and haven't figured out which CSU's to apply to as major backups. I currently have a B.A. in Sociology, graduated with a 3.34 GPA (not the best) and have some work experience related to my field.

-I have worked with kids and teens for the past 3 years -- mainly from immigrant/Latin@ communities

-Organizing experience that focuses on bringing the arts to the Southeast Los Angeles communities

-Currently doing a 1 year internship with an organization that focuses on Reproductive Justice

My first choice is UCLA and they require applicants who have a GPA lower than a 3.3. to take the GRE. I fall exactly at the 3.3. borderline and I'm wondering if I should take the GRE anyways? Univ. of Michigan and Chicago don't require the GRE so I'm reluctant to take it if only one school requires.

Basically I'm worried, like all other applicants, I won't get in to any of the schools because of my GPA and past experience.

Is there anyone that can help me with some of my concerns? I'm also looking for people who are currently in MSW programs at the schools stated above.

I would recommend taking the GRE, just to keep your application strong. I'm also planning to apply to MSW programs this fall. Your experience seems strong and relevant, esp with the consistency in population. I would look at Cal States more closely though - I don't think the burden of debt and low pay of social work can be over stated, and at the end of the day the name on your diploma is completely irrelevant. I would also advise abt looking outside of the LA area, as it's really over saturated with MSW programs, making finding an internship that much more difficult. Good luck!
