It should be possible to see who is voting on your posts and how they voted. I think the anonymity provides an incentive for abuse.

@Lux Lex Pax, I believe that's a limitation of the software. That said, the software also limits how many up/down votes one user can make each day. If you believe that someone is abusing the reputation points, send me a message about it.

Hi mods,

Just wanted to let you know that I'm for some reason unable to see any up/down votes on posts. If I vote on a post, I can see that post's "score," but unless I do so, everything appears as "0." For example, I just up-voted a post, after which I saw "3" in green--but before I'd voted, it just showed "0" in grey.

Mods,

There appears to be some angry people(s) in the Religion section. Each day it seems someone is going back to old posts and giving me negative feedback? My negative rises each day but I have not been posting! It's not just me, but a few others who have well over 100 negative points. It's really not that big of a deal, but I was curious if there was anything to be done? If anything, i'll just start a new account to whip it, and perhaps escape my secret enemies.

cheers

I'm with jdmhotness, the negative downvoting is getting out of hand in the religion section. I PMed an admin about it but have yet to hear back from them yet some of the frequent posters in the Religion section are getting 20-30 negative votes a day. There's not even that many people who are active in that forum in a month.

How exactly does the system work? Is downvoting tied to an IP address or username? Could someone theoritically create multiple accounts and cycle through them to downvote posts?

From following the people getting downvotes, it seems to be anyone admitted/attending Harvard/Yale/Princeton/Duke.

I think the reputation point info for your post above answers that question. ;)

I suggested this several pages and about a year ago, but I'm of the opinion that the ability to up and down-vote posts should be tied to a certain (minor) status. Maybe 50 or 100 posts?

That stops people from cycling accounts, and also makes it such that you have to have actually been here a little while to be able to rate other peoples contributions.

Yes. A poster is going through and using his three sock puppet accounts to provide anyone he dislikes a -4 to each post. See what happened to jdmhotness’ posts here:
http://forum.thegrad...hamchapel-hill/
This has happened to a number of posters including Balatro, jdmhotness, myself, and someone who has evidently left after renaming their account “thanks4downvoting.” One can easily ignore such childishness on a personal level, but some of us are in doctoral programs already and stick around in order to share our experience with those seeking admission to grad school. Reputation scores around the -100 level cast us as malcontents and render our information useless to the new people in need of help.

I PMed an admin about it but have yet to hear back from them yet some of the frequent posters in the Religion section are getting 20-30 negative votes a day.

I too have notified the admins and mods by private messenger of the problem and the culprit, but after more than two weeks, no response and nothing has happened. I appreciate this forum and the amount of work that its creators have put into it, but with respect, if you don’t have time to address individual trolls/stalkers, you really should discontinue the reputation points feature. It’s only notable at this point for being abused and discouraging long-time posters from participating.

Best wishes,

W.

Lately I've been seeing OP's with an upvote, usually just one. Often these posts are not particularly notable or (in my opinion) even kind of whiny. Any idea why people would upvote something like that? Is there some social norm for upvoting OP's about which I'm unaware?

Is it the OP upvoting themselves? Because I've seen that happen a number of times.

You can upvote your own post, there is nothing barring that. If you think that this is a problem with certain users, let us know what posts you're referring to and we'll see what we can do.
The advice in this post is based on my own personal experience. YMMV.
Pardon my typos..

I usually end up starting with a negative reputation value turning into slight plus.

You can train your communication skills with the reputation points.
Good sales communicators easily can write postings which get lot of +1.

At least this works to get followers at Google+ and such circle systems. It's not really perfect or scientific but more use than harm.

No posts/posters are specifically coming to mind, I just read one or two and thought to myself, "Who would upvote this?" Just a head scratcher. It hadn't occurred to me that people could vote their own posts. Thanks for the clarification!

Take, as a prime example, the post right above you, where Germany2012 has upvoted his own post about how to get more positive reputation!

You can click the actual reputation number rather than the vote buttons, and it will pop up who gave the reputation, if you're ever curious.
