Found the lab I want to join...with one caveat

I found a lab I love, with a project I love, and a PI that I really click with. He would also love to have me. My only problem is that he's not sure on the state of his funding just yet. He's an MD who hasn't had many PhDs, so he would want me to have a more experienced co-mentor, who I would probably rotate with for my third rotation if I do choose his lab.

I really want to join this lab, but if the funding doesn't work out, I don't know that it would be possible... Is there anything I can do to make this happen? I'm a first year PhD student I'm feeling very clueless here
