  1. Local Singapore banks will only provide $4,000 for the entire year, which is barely half of the tuition coverage. I can't believe this isn't a bigger issue on this forum. Maybe it's really that USA-centric? My 2nd year will be covered by the research scholarship it's this 1st year that i'm worried about. It's hard to believe that i cant just take out a $10,000 loan from SOMEWHERE.
  2. ^ well yeah they do have partnerships with local banks, however, they only allow about $4000 per year. Which is fairly useless. At this point I'm even willing to convert to Bank of America or Chase.
  3. ^ Thanks man, someone else had said the same thing. I may have to convert to Bank of America (ugh) for this... .
  4. Hm I thought FAFSA was for USA-schools only? I can look into it but assume the deadline's passed... Nuya that's a shame! I did look at their options but they only give like $6,000 USD/year. I'd rather get it all from 1 source. I did apply to a Fulbright (in SP, actually) and got rejected. I didn't think they'd pay for grad school if you got in independently? Thanks for the responses guys i'm sure many others in my boat will gain from this!
  5. Honestly, although the situation might be worse than you expected upon arrival, there is very little chance it would be "disasterous". People are generally trustworthy (have you called them?) and besides, think about how they must feel letting in an international student who's practically a stranger! Some people (like myself) prefer to stay for free via BeWelcome.org for a couple days to scout out the area. I stayed with someone who did it in Berkeley and I plan to do it when I go to Singapore myself. .
  6. On top of that, they usually give you a few weeks after the last day of classes. So there's some leeway on leaving the country (allowing for some travel, goodbyes) .
  7. So no, I'm not a genius.. although the program I got accepted to has a reasonably low tuition, I'll need a loan from someone, somewhere. And all sources seem to assume that only international students studying IN the USA are the ones looking for a source. I didn't think it would be this difficult, but finding an institution that dishes out loans for those studying internationally is getting tough. I'm sure there are several others out there doing this - is there some secret I'm overlooking?
  8. This Q must have been asked before, but can't seem to find a direct answer... I got into a 2-year program in Singapore.. But my bank is too small to provide loans, and every other resource I find is for international students studying in the USA. I want it for the other way around! Are all institutions (and websites) so cocky as to think no USA citizens want to study abroad?? .
  9. My statistics are garbage... I'm really not optimistic about my chances of admission to Berkeley, which is the only domestic institution I applied to. Undergrad Institution: UIUC (#1 for Civil/Environmental, my main selling point) Major(s): Civil/Environmental, with a focus on Environmental GPA in Major: 3.5 Overall GPA: 3.22 Length of Degree: 4 years Position in Class: Average Type of Student: Out-of-State citizen, middle eastern ethnicity GRE Scores: Q: 160 V: 158 W: 5.0 Research Experience: - practically none, other than at my current company which is in-line with my major Pertinent Activities or Jobs: - Undergraduate differential equations TA for 2 semesters - Lectured engineering topics at a university level upon graduation (Vietnam) - Currently a research associate for remediation firm, and tutoring in Calculus/Physics/SAT Misc note: Strangely, the admissions lady at UCB told me that "I did not have to take the GRE again" when she looked at my application when I enquired whether UCB would receive a 2nd GRE score in time if I re-took it in December. I'm not sure what that's supposed to mean. Applying for MS at: UC-Berkeley only. I have a couple other opportunities abroad, but I stayed in Berkeley 1 month over the winter and loved it. Will let you know my result in April...
  10. While I'd love to swap essays, is there anyone that's going into a more technical field (i.e. engineering) that would be preferable.. haha. .
  11. Haha, that is funny that they misspelled Berkeley, but damn, that is slightly disheartening if not incredibly useful link you provided. I haven't studied at all since I last left the GRE a month ago, hoping that the prestige of UIUC would be enough to funnel me through. I have just a few days to decide..
  12. IMO, a 170Q is pretty much an easy-in for MIT.. what they won't care about is the 70% honors thing.
  13. So I completed my 1st GRE about a month ago with 3 weeks of preparation, in preparation for Civil/Environmental Engineering at some top schools. I'm not sure what to think of my score - I'm in the top 20% in terms of mathematical ability. My main school I'm focusing on now is UC Berkeley, and since I'm coming from a university with similar prestige (U of I Champaign) I feel that it should be a smooth transition. But I have no real statistics on UCB, nor do I see anyone else talking about them.. With a GPA of 3.22/3.4/3.58 (total/grad/major) is this a long shot? - Cyrone
  14. Damn, this makes me want to retake it now I'm guessing for Berkeley it would be around ~165 as well. I'm screwed.
  15. I provided the link at the top Regardless of whether they are a "combination", University of Michigan having an average 167Q even across all fields is ridiculous. I guess my main question is where you guys typically go for aggregate scores.
