  1. Thanks everyone! Very helpful!
  2. Hello! I am trying to decide if iI want to buy Apple's Airport Time Capsule for wireless back up (but am seeing some pretty bad reviews). I currently have an external hard drive but never remember to do it frequently enough. I wanted to know more about your back up systems. Do some of you only rely on dropbox? I don't know why I feel strange having everything (no data) on dropbox ... but I am thinking this might be the way to go... What do you guys do? Thanks for any help!
  3. Thanks for the response! It is for my doctoral dissertation. I am preparing to defend my proposal to my committee and plan to start collecting data relatively soon. This will likely take 2-3 years from start to finish. The funding would be used to purchase standardized measures, print questionnaires, possible participant payment, etc. At this point I would take anything (e.g., I am applying for a small 1000$ grant for research) but ideally I would like to be able to hire a part-time RA to help with data collection, this would definitely increase the amount needed substantially. Any hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
  4. I am in Canada and was wondering if any of you knew of research grant opportunities that students could apply for directly? I am starting a new project with my supervisor but it is primarily my idea so I want to put the work in to get funded. She mentioned some opportunities through my university but I was wondering if any of you knew of other research grant opportunities that a graduate student could be listed as the PI?
  5. Yes it is. I am in a clinical school psychology program in the Faculty of Education. Thank you crimsoc!
  6. Successful! Got my letter in Montreal ... I have quite literally been up and down the stairs 4 times already to check. 16.5/20 in the A category. Definitely familiar with rejection. So for all those rejected or waitlisted if at first you don't succeed try, try again.
  7. Thanks for the response and the suggestions. I have already submitted my application but I have definitely made use of my programs workshops. They have a particularly great one where you get to sit with a SSHRC reviewer for 20 min to review your proposal. I found out from my supervisor (don't think she was supposed to tell me) that I was ranked 1st! I am very used to not getting things (undergrad GPA problems) so this was quite a nice surprise for me so I thought I would see if I was still eligible for CGS. This is great news! Thanks again. Now I play the waiting game.
  8. I am a second year PhD student and was wondering about my eligibility for CGS ($35,000/yr). It stipulates that if you have completed between 5 and 16 months (by December 31st) you are still eligible but if you have completed between 17 and 28 months you are not. I will have completed exactly 16 months. Just wondering if anyone out there has received the CGS and was funded 35,000 for their 3rd, 4th, and 5th year in Doctoral studies.
  9. Thanks for the response! It is different from the Vanier contributions section, in that it is really meant to be a list of your contributions without a written justification. Also, unfortunately unlike NSERC it is definitely only 1 page, but you listed a lot of suggestions I will use Cup o Joe!! Thanks a bunch! Laura
  10. I am getting ready to apply for SSHRC a second time around and had a questions regarding the research contributions section. I presently have over a dozen paper and poster presentations, 3 peer-reviewed publications, 1 forthcoming (1st author), 2 other refereed contributions, 2 invited guest lectures. I have noticed when people share their stats they seem to list everything they have done .... but I cannot fit all of these contributions in the 1 page alloted for research contributions. What am I missing? Presently I list all bibliographic details for all of my contributions.... Should I only be listing full details for published work? If so, how do you present conferences, invited talks, etc. to maximize space? Thanks and good luck to everyone applying this time around!
  11. Got it last year with a 17.08/20 I too have a weak undergraduate GPA so I lost most of my points in that section but was able to make it up in the last 2 categories. Hope you got good news too!
  12. Sorry for the delayed response! I totally see where you are coming from. I know I can get a strong academic letter from my Masters (or current) supervisor. I am just having difficulty thinking of someone to write the non-academic letter. I worry because technically the lab I coordinated was in an acadmic setting (university hospital) but I was employed and not a student....
  13. I just had a quick question about the non-academic reference letter for the Vanier award. Over the past few years the only people I can think of who would be able to give me excellent letters are in academia, however I haven't always been their students. Would it be appropriate to have for instance my supervisor/boss as a non-academic reference as I worked for them as a lab coordinator?? They mention the following on the website: "Faculty members may provide this letter, as long as they know you in a non-academic capacity and are addressing your leadership in a non-academic environment."
  14. This is great to know! But in a funny way bad news... as I will have to start panicking and preparing for the next round of applications.... which is just around the corner!
  15. I was wondering if anyone from Quebec could help me with this question. I did not make it past round 1 for SSHRC this year (first year applying for my first year of PhD studies in the Fall). I did, however, receive FQRSC, which I am very happy about. The only thing is FQRSC offers funding for fewer years. The maximum I could receive is 60,000. I know that if I were to apply for SSHRC next year I would not be permitted to hold both awards. What I am not certain of, is whether I am allowed to apply for SSHRC at all after having received provincial funding from Quebec for a year. Anyone been in a similar situation?
