  1. Alright friends, I have still received no email and no award updates. Queries to NDSEG via email have resulted in a delay due to high volume of emails. Anyone else in the same limbo?
  2. Right. So I'm finishing up campus visits within the next week, and I have some big decisions to make. I have excellent funding and good potential advisors lined up for all 4 programs in the geosciences, largely focusing on terrestrial or marine stable isotope geochemistry: UToronto earth sciences, funded by Connaught International Scholarship UChicago geophysical sciences, funded by RA/TA, with additional relocation assistance and small 2-year $4500 named fellowships UDelaware oceanography, funded by Marian R Okie fellowship and RA MIT/WHOI marine geology/ chemical oceanography, funded by RA I think I'd be fine with any of these programs, research and career-wise, and I'm continuing to talk to POIs and current students. Anyone have any particular insights into any of these programs, or has anyone faced choosing between these before?

  4. Hi all, Just a few words of advice. Panicked about the award announcements? Go for a run, go make a mug of tea, whatever it takes to get out of your head. Don't let it ruin your weekend, and don't stay up all night for the announcement. I applied last year, made myself sick worrying about decisions, and was bitterly disappointed when I didn't even get an honorable mention with all VG/E reviews. Actually, mostly I was disappointed that I had stressed myself out and still had to go to campus after staying up all night refreshing my email. But I was fortunate enough to get past the setback and find plenty of funding elsewhere, through my department and through other small sources. I applied again for this year, but instead of the panicking oh-god-what-if-this-ruins-my-graduate-career response for the next bunch of days, I am choosing to block related websites until the decisions are actually out. I wish someone had given me this advice last year, but I'm glad to know it this time around. So trust me on this: calm it down, and get out of your head. And congratulations to this year's winners!
  5. ? I can't find another forum on SU...
  6. Anyone? (Earth Sciences here!)
  7. I gave myself today as a deadline and I just picked one. It's done. Everyone's been notified, I've declined the programs I decided against, and now I just need to fill in my intent to register form. But that was all about two hours ago, and I felt good about it then. Now I'm freaking out. "Oh-god-oh-god-I-take-it-back. I was just kidding. I wasn't ready." It's freaky.
  8. I'm down to deciding between remaining in my hometown for grad school (either at my current institution or the one next door) or moving about 4.5 hours away. Each program is well funded, interesting, filled with good advisors, and so on and so forth, so I'm really coming down to location. I understand the benefits of branching out and moving to another city, but I'm hitting a large roadblock: family. There are a number of medical and financial issues within my immediate family that make even thinking about moving away seem like running away or abandoning home. I always see grad posts about significant others, but has anyone around here dealt with larger family issues?

Hi caromd50 -- looks like we're not getting much information this way. Have you visited the campus yet? (I'm going next week and will hopefully get some information on these sorts of things...)

Also looking for living information. I'm visiting Newark next week-- any must see spots on or around campus to check out?

Can we bump this thread up for Fall 2013? I'm visiting in a few weeks, prospective grad student in ocean engineering. Any hints/tips/useful information from current UDel students?
