  1. Sorry if I was unclear. I know OAC ended a while ago, but that's why 3 year degrees exist. On admission requirements, when they ask for an honours degree, in my experience, this designates a 4 year vs a 3 year degree, at least that's how it gets treated for BC applicants. We don't have this idea of maintaining a certain GPA to get honours out here. We have separate honours streams that you enrol in specifically and do an honors in your discipline rather than a major. If you needed an honours degree to get into grad school all of us out here who did double majors rather than a single honours would have a hard time getting in anywhere. It still seems worth clarifying with the particular schools about how they are using the phrase"honours degree"
  2. I have a feeling that in this case "honours" degree just means a four year degree. You're talking about ontario schools who (because they had the OAC year of high school until recently) had both 3 year general degrees and 4 year honours degrees. I don't think it's a matter of graduating "with honours". If a grade cut off has been stated and you still meet it you're probably fine. However, I strongly recommend contacting Guelph and Western to confirm this. I looked into the "honours" thing when i was applying to schools in ontario because all we have out here in BC is 4 year degrees, you can do the honours stream but don't have to. When it comes to BC applicants any 4 year degree is acceptable. You're probably fine, but, as I say, ask the school in question to clarify.
  3. I'm not waterloo, but I was accepted to the English department's XDM MA program last year and had the opportunity to meet a number of people from the English PHD program at a conference last year. I was disappointed I couldn't accept my spot there, but I was accepted to a phd program elsewhere. My perception of the english program is that they do a lot of interesting and interdisciplinary things especially as concerns technology and media. If you're interested in a digital humanities approach to english and looking at digital/multimedia texts it seems like a good place. If it strikes you as a good fit and you're ok with living in waterloo then it seems like a good choice to me. Really it might depend a lot on your research interests though.
  4. It will probably be a couple more weeks. Last year, I didn't hear from the phd program until march 21st. I know that some of the MA's from last fall's cohort didn't here until april. And, this year the application deadline was a month later than previous years.
  5. JL24, just some advice I wish I had last year before applying to McGill. They don't have an undergrad program so they don't have ta's, meaning they can't fund many graduate students. Wish I had known that because then I might have applied to more than two phd programs, luckily I got into my first choice (sfu) and it didn't matter. If you like McLuhan you might consider York (in Toronto) as well.
  6. I'm finishing up a MA in Professional Communication from Royal Roads, which as i understand it is similar to Ryerson's, and have been accepted to Simon Fraser's PHD program in communication. So, it definitely seems possible to go from a pro comm masters to a PhD in comm.
  7. Oh yeah, I have no regrets about accepting SFU and I do feel it's the right choice. Doesn't mean I'm not a little disappointed that I will have to miss out on Waterloo, I really wish I could do both, although I accept that I can't. I am curious to see if there are any conferences or inter-institutional projects that might let me experience a bit of what goes on in the XDM. I am also interested to see what people at Carleton's lab are working on, I'll get a glimpse of it in may when I go to their Interface conference.
  8. Yeah, it would have nice to be going to waterloo too. Professor O'Gorman and Harris both seemed very nice and understanding when I let them know my decision. I mean I guess having two wonderful programs accept you is a wonderful problem to have, but still disappointing when I can only pursue one exciting opportunity. Hopefully my declining made someone's day by getting them off the waitlist. My offer was 15 k in the form of TAships, RAships and scholarships over 3 semesters. And I apparently got into both the co-op option and non, i didn't inquire as to whether the funding would be the same for both. I might try to keep in touch with you through gradcafe if that's alright because I am still interested to hear about the program and all the cool stuff you'll get up to in it.
  9. Officially declined the waterloo offer today. Just waiting on the official offer from SFU so I accept it and have everything be settled now. As happy as I am with the decision, declining still feels hard. All that time and stress went into applying and waiting only to have to say no to one of the offers i really wanted .
  10. Annecity, have you heard anything from waterloo XDM yet?
  11. All of a sudden this application cycle is over for me. After lots of waiting I heard from SFU Communication and Waterloo English within 45 minutes of each other. Admitted to both! leaning strongly toward the Phd in Comm at SFU, waiting for more details on both. Very excited, these were my first admits!
  12. Incase anyone else is waiting to hear from SFU about a phd in communications, I heard from the department that they are finalizing their decisions and we should be hearing "shortly". Not exactly how soon that will be, hopefully this week. At least it means there is some movement. Excited to hear, good luck everyone!
  13. I am definitely hoping that the program being underated and obscure works to our advantage. I only heard about it because there was an email circulated through the Canadian Communication Association about it, my friend and classmate from my current program is a member and saw it and forwarded it me because she thought I might be interested. One of my very good friends is currently at waterloo and yet I had still not heard of the program before that. It definitely seems like somethign that's still not very well known, but it seems like a good sort of program for waterloo to have to improve its humanities offerings. I agree that the rhetoric option seems decent too, although I'm not sure it seems as in line with Waterloo's general reputation. I think having a hands on degree from what is basically canada's best engineering/technology school might have more cache. I have been really itching to do something more hands on and constructive in the past few years, with critical theory it often feels like it's all inconsequential estoerica that only tears down, this might be a nice antidote. It really will be a hard choice between this and SFU for a phd (mcgill finally made their expected rejection official today) really hard. SFU is a great fit for me and what i do, but this program would give me an even wider base and new perspective on what I do. I'd just have so many more options both academically and career wise outside of academia I expect. I glanced over the critical media lab projects a while ago, I'll have to go refresh myself on what they've been doing while i wait to hear. I wonder how much longer it will be, the deadline was so late I wonder if it might be april...I really hope not.
  14. Hmm, you know, it never even occured to me to write separate letters for the co-op and non co-op option... I just gave them duplicate applications and am left it up to them. And, I will never be over theory. I am over merely writing and reading theory though. The XDM appeals to the phenomenologist in me, getting to experience theory in news ways by using it to craft material things just sounds awesome and a great way to get at ideas that might not be as evident when presented in the form of rational argument. Because the program is so different, but complimentary to, other reading and writing theory programs I've done I am very tempted to take a year or two off for the change of pace before applying to phds again with another MA to my name. The co-op program with a google headquarters so close to campus makes the nerdboy in me squee with delight when I think of all the possibilities. I should mention that critical theory of technology is my research interest so getting hands on experience so that i might be able to get a private sector research job would also just be amazing. I never thought waterloo would have something to make me this excited...
  15. Well, I finally heard something from somewhere, unfortunately it was a rejection. Not going to McGill in the fall. it was expected but I wish the first response had been better news. Anyway, for anyone else waiting to hear from McGill for the Comm studies PHD program it looks like they are starting to reply. Good luck to the rest of you. Been rejected by that department twice, now, applied there for my MA too, maybe I should start to get the message...
