  1. While not really a great setup to posit a astronomical understatement, if one has dependents it shows up even more on the IBR. I basically plug in family size and I need to be getting close to 100K salary before the serious repayment starts to kick in. While granted I will not have dependents young forever, and the program may not last forever. but...........
  2. If one is at a school and they do not offer a course you need there is an option for independent study course. I am wondering if there is any or much value to this. Can anyone speak to its usefulness or lack thereof in aiming for PhD admittance? On the one hand it will show that you are an independent person who is willing to be a self starter. on the other hand is it that big a deal or does it simply come down to the other major points. I just am questioning if the adcom is going to go over your transcripts looking at each class. Or does it pretty much come down like always or many times to writing sample and SOP.
  3. Is there a list of which schools primarily use POI vs. Ad com when making decisions? I assume not, but just thought I would ask. Which schools weigh more heavily the POI influence is basically what I am interested in. I am referring pretty much to top tier schools here. Ivy's Chicago, Duke, etc.
  4. If that is really what you feel like you want to do then obviously go for it. My situation is somewhat similar to yours so I can resonate somewhat with what you are feeling. I would throw out a word of caution though. I assume by Phd you want to get into a top tier funded program. Correct? If so then I assume you do realize that the majority of applicants get rejected. Correct? You can go get an MTS but it will not automatically get you into School X for a PhD. Just want to make sure that you think about these things carefully before jumping in.
  5. Thanks to everyone for the responses. Most of this lines up with what I have read previously. As far as my ministry experience tying into field of study (theology). No, I am not inclined that direction. I assume therefore it is of virtually no use. I guess I was just wondering if they would look at that like " oh you have a family, full time ministry, full time student, and good grades. Yes that shows you are not flippantly doing things". Probably all depends on season of app, poi, school, etc. All I think we can ever know is that we do not know. I would add to answer some of the points. I am not looking for a confessional place necessarily. I have not really thought VDS was a fit for me.
  6. As I think about the top schools and hundreds of apps and acceptance of like 5 percent I wonder are all apps worthy of applying there? I know there is really no way to know a reasonable answer. I guess since only 10 get picked out of 200 then we know that the answer is no all should not apply. But I wonder does everyone that applies to Duke have a masters or two or three with 3.8 gpa? Consider myself I have or will an MDiv evangelical school ThM different evangelical school highly respected for language, an MA in linguistics from a regionally accredited linguistics only school. All my gpa's will be 3.8 or more. I have strike against me for age. I have 12 years as senior pastor does that count for anything? I have read yes and no. Am I wasting my time? lol.
  7. Is fit with professor X at school Z the most important aspect? The more I read the more it seems it is. After reading the "get a B" thread and others like it, one can see that many, many people will have 3.5-4.0 gpa. Many will have master's degrees and multiple ones at times. It seems like connecting with a POI before hand is one of the most important aspects, if not the most important. Obviously SOP is very important, but if I have made connections with professor X before at SBL, email, conference then it can overrule everything else. Thoughts?
  8. In the results search some of them have a red diamond with gpa/gre stats. However, the ones that have it are basically saying undergrad gpa. Why is that? Is that accurate, or am I missing something, or am I just coming at this from the religion background? It does not seem to matter what the ug gpa is that much for people that have a masters, or two, or three before getting into phd. So is it accurate that what I see is ug gpa, and not grad gpa? I see a few that post their master gpa in the comments, but very few. I just wish I could see more is all.
  9. Thank you. so basically if you get interview you are in at Duke.
  10. Can anyone verify that it is true that Duke only interviews one per subfield? I was just wondering how that might work. They interview the one they like, or one that is lower and depending on how that goes they take that person or bump someone up. anyone have any insight into this? I am not applying right now just wondering. They generally only take avg. 1 per subfield. right?
  11. What prof are you looking to work with that you like?
