  1. Hi Amanda, My ex-boyfriend lived in the neighborhood and I used to be up there every weekend. I really never felt uncomfortable. I'm not sure what population you want to work with, but I feel as though you're going to be in areas similar to East Harlem a lot in the social work field. You can get unwelcome attention no matter where you go, and you're going to find good and bad people anywhere you go also. I wouldn't base my future on a couple of immature guys and preconceived notions of a neighborhood. Maybe go there again one weekend and just explore a bit more. There's fantastic places to eat and shop. Give it another try
  2. Hi everyone, congrats! I can't wait to meet you all in the Fall. I will be attending the advanced standing track this upcoming fall. I have a few questions about financial aid: has anyone heard anything about financial aid yet? I am very confused. I know there is a scholarship form that you must fill out to be eligible for financial aid, but it's asking how much I have been approved for in work study/loans. How am I supposed to know that until I get my financial aid package?? Thanks so much for your help
  3. Hi everyone, I might possibly be looking for a room mate when I start at Hunter this fall. I am advanced standing, so it would be for a year. I was thinking of the Miles - which is on 121st and Lexington - only a few blocks from Hunter's SW building. The rent is about $2200 for a two bedroom, with ALL utilities included, so it would be about $1100 each. I've contacted them already, and they said it's too early to tell if there will be availability, but it is likely. They will be contacting me in June. Please send me a private message if interested. Thanks
  4. Does anyone know when Hunter sends out financial aid? I was accepted about two weeks ago and they've already received my FAFSA. (I know CUNy tuition is inexpensive compared to other schools, but $6,000+ a semester is still expensive for me) Thank you so much for your help!
  5. Hi everyone, I have some questions about the FAFSA form. I found out I was admitted to Hunter's MSW program for the Fall 2014. However, I haven't filed FAFSA yet because my W2 form got lost in the mail and I had to wait for it. I plan on filling it out tonight. My questions are as follows: 1) Because I was accepted before I filled out the FAFSA form ,does that automatically disqualify me for any financial aid? 2) Since I am in grad school now, I've heard that you no longer have to report your parent's income? Is this true? Is there any down side to this? Thank you so much!
  6. Hi, I don't think it means you've been rejected (they would have told you that already if thy had come to that decision.) I know many people in my classes now that still haven't heard back from any schools they've applied to. Most of them applied right around the deadline. I believe Hunter's deadline was Feb. 12, with an additional two weeks to hand in supplementals. I say just keep calm and try not to freak out too much (I know that's easier said than done.) Just keep reminding yourself that you've done everything you could. Good luck!
  7. I just found out I was accepted!! I'm so excited and relieved. This was just a week after my interview, so they seem to move pretty quickly after that initial stage. Good luck to everyone! If anyone else is attending the advanced standing track, feel free to message me! I might possibly be looking for a room mate in East Harlem
  8. You'll be okay! I wasn't really nervous until after we got into the room. Then it hit me! Just take deep breaths and be confident in all of your acomplishments and why you want to go into the field. Best of luck! Hopefully we will be cohorts
  9. Hey MaggieDot, I did an in-person interview, not Skype. It really wasn't bad at all. I'm assuming it's basically the same for a Skype interview too, so here's the questions they asked: -What experience do you have in the field and how does it relate to SW. Why did you choose Hunter? -How would you define your social identity and how will it impact your work with clients? -The facilitator read a short vignette about a returning veteran who is having attachment issues and wants to continue texting you after your therapy sessions end. What are your thoughts on this and what would you do in the situation? -The writing sample was about a city with a high minority population, where the LGBTQ population is often harrassed by both neighbors and the police. Many stores have become "safe spaces" for the LGBTQ population, and a Pride Parade is held. What implications for social welfare does this article have? I'm sure that the questions, vignette and the article will change for each interview. However, you can get the general idea Everyone says not to answer first, but if you are confident in your answer, I say go for it! There were a few times when I waited for someone else to answer and was left thinking, "damn, that's what I wanted to say. Now it's going to look like I'm copying them!" Then you have to try to put your own spin on their answer. So in general, the interview is really not bad at all. Everyone was really friendly (including the facilitator), and it was pretty laid back. Good luck!
  10. That's really great advice- thanks so much!
  11. I have my interview tomorrow - can anyone share any tips?? Thank you so much!
  12. Well let me know if you hear anything
  13. How long ago did you apply? My application was just completed a couple of weeks ago because no matter how much I nagged my supervisor she still submitted my recommendation at the last possible minute I feel like I'm going to throw up I swear Also, looking at Fordham's website, it seems like they don't really give financial aid or any type of merit scholarships...
  14. Wow... First, if she is interviewed, this might work against her. If you are stealing someone else's ideas it is very easy to make them sound authentic on paper. However, she can't fake this in person. Second, has she submitted the applications yet? I would really talk to her more about this... It isn't fair to you, and if she really wants to be a social worker this goes against the code of ethics. Third, if she does decide to submit the applications, don't sweat it too much and don't let it cause a rift in your friendship. Your experiences and how you respond to them are what shape you as a social worker and as a person. She has her own experiences, and why she couldn't use those I'm not sure. Maybe she is not confident enough - and that will hurt her in the long run. However, I'm sure she has had many experiences that she could use if she only thinks about it hard enough and does a lot of self-relfecting.
  15. The supervisor for my undergrad internship went to Columbia and basically hated it. Said it was unorganized, snobby, etc. That's just based on her and another social worker's opinion though.
