  1. Wow. That sounds pretty cool. Thanks for sharing.
  2. Would you mind sharing those other factors? Just curious, at this point.
  3. Just to echo what Geo said, you'll have to apply to programs that do not require a GRE. because no program that does require a GRE can accept you even if they really wanted to. IME, programs that do not require the GRE are generally not programs I'd recommend attending. AFAIK, this is true of an MPH and doctorate (in public health, at least). So if we're assuming the GRE stays as is (for argument's sake), then you'd probably need to apply and attend out of country or in a program that doesn't require a GRE.
  4. I am always for people taking a year off. Get some additional work experience, build up a little savings, make sure you're confident in your future goals and plans. It sounds like a good idea in your situation.
  5. Hey, I wasn't really sure where to put this, so apologize if it's in the wrong sub-forum. Anyway, I will be attending the University of Minnesota's School of Public Health for the next two years. My initial offer was a scholarship and RA position (which includes a tuition waiver and wages). The job demands about 10 hours a week, marked as "flexible," if that is important. I've been told that the school has an open graduate assistant position that is mine if I so desire. The GA position is also 10 hours a week, but I believe they give out specific shifts (so I'd have preset work hours). With the first job, my total COA is just under 40k, mostly from COL, which would be about 45k at graduation. If I took the second position, my total COA would be about 14.5k, all from COL, which would be about 16k at graduation. However, I would also have a 20 hour workload (assuming it is strict at 20hours, which I think isn't necessarily a good assumption) on top of a 16-14 credit load (sem1-sem2). Relevant info: Job placement for UMN in this major is 100% (6 months out). That's a firm 100%, nothing school funded. They are very transparent with their placement info. Students typically go into either A.) a 1 or 2 year fellowship at a hospital (salary range: 45-60k, average in low 50s) before transitioning into a "real job" or B.) a "real job" right away (salary range 70k-140k first year, avg in low 90s). Ideally, I'd like to do a fellowship because most of the "real jobs" right out of school are of the consulting genre, which Im not really interested in (at least early on). Plus, my previous work experience isn't directly related to the field (but it is relevant work experience), which really limits my options. I am single, so the workload wouldn't be ruining a more important relationship, but I also would love to have some free time in Minneapolis to live life and stuff. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I welcome all opinions on this. I worked full-time during the last three years of UG career, so I feel like I could handle the workload. However, this is a masters that I assume will be quite a bit more demanding. Full disclosure: I'm leaning toward accepting the position. But I'm not leaning so much so that I couldn't be persuaded, so I'd love to hear from people who have experience in a similar situation. Thanks for reading through. I appreciate any and all comments.
  6. 100% in agreement with you, dude. Unfortunately, that's the going rate in Uptown.
  7. It sounds like most havent heard back about it yet (although a few mentioned some for MPH degrees on SDN forums), which I guess is a positive. Based on previous cycles, it seems like we should have heard already or should hear about it relatively soon (like, tomorrow). Otherwise we'll have to wait until April. If you hear something please post/let me know. I'll do the same.
  8. Would really love to hear back re: finaid for UMich MHSA.
  9. Yeah, dude, same here. I actually think I've been receiving faulty info re: their finaid. I scoured SDN Forums and Gradcafe forums and couldn't find anyone that reported receiving a scholly/GA with their admissions decision BEFORE the second batch of decisions in early March (March 5th this year). I'm obviously just speculating, but i think they send out their first wave of finaid w/ their second wave of decisions. If not, then
  10. Applied to USC in mid November for the Residential MHA program. "Interviewed" in early February. Just received a full tuition Dean's Merit scholarship (arrived last week but my mail hasn't been delivered in a while due to weather). Really, really pumped. For future applicants, check my profile and stuff if you'd like to compare.
  11. @Anyone who has been admitted to UMN: When you received your admissions decision, did it include finaid/scholarship/GA position awards? Or have you received any since?
  12. Yeah, dude, what katethekitkat said. I ended up applying to 7 schools because I was worried about the slight chance of getting dinged at the 4 schools I'd consider attending. Now it's just 3 schools of application fees and time&effort wasted because I'm simply withdrawing. I guess it depends on your mindset and how much 80-100$ means to you. If you'd rather be safe and/or have the dough to apply to many schools - it certainly doesn't hurt anything.
  13. Received an invitation to interview (yesterday by phone) with USC. Hardly even an interview, really, more like a telephonic meet & greet with the program director. Went really, really well.
  14. Similar to the above question, does anyone know when MHA/MHSA accepted applicants will receive financial aid information (Scholarship, grant, graduate/research assistanship) from schools like Michigan, Minnesota, UNC, etc...?
  15. Hello. Stats: 3.4-3.45 GPA 162-164v, 160-161q, 5W Roughly 4 years of work experience Applied (All HMP): Michigan, Minnesota, UNC, Johns Hopkins, MUSC, USC, Columbia (All between November 19th and November 27th) Accepted: Michigan (Interview Jan. 22, accepted the following week), Minnesota (interview early Feb, accepted 3 days later) Withdrawn: UNC (invited to interview in early Jan, scheduled for late Feb), MUSC (invited to interview in early Feb, scheduled for late Feb) Waiting: JHU (nothing from them), USC (according to SDN Forums, we should hear late feb/early march), Columbia (informal interview in late Jan) For those asking about Columbia interviewing. I applied to the HMP program in late november and receiving an email informing me that I would be contacted by a current student in the coming days. I was contacted between Jan 29-Jan31 (only a few days later) and participated in a brief interview (goals? why columbia? etc...) If anyone wants more info from me, please feel free to ask.
