  1. I got rejected from the UCLA Statistics PhD program earlier today.
  2. Thanks for the resources JohnKim. I took the exam today and got 154 (65%) on verbal and 169 (96%) on quantitative in case any one is interested. I am satisfied with my scores.
  3. Thanks for the reply, jswizzle48. I must admit that I could have spent more time studying for the verbal section. Hopefully I will get a better verbal score after some serious studying.
  4. I am applying to Statistics PhD programs to start in Fall 2018 after getting a MS in Statistics from an unranked regional school. I got 150 (47%) for Verbal, 168 (95%) for Quantitative, and 3.5 (42%) for AWA from general GRE when I was applying 2 years ago. I am not sure if 150 on verbal would raise any red flag on my application. I am hoping 168 on quantitative would kind of 'cancel out' my low verbal and writing scores. Any insights or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  5. (GRE took last year - V: 149 & Q: 165) Kaplan Practice Test - V: 155 & Q: 152 (took about a month ago) Power Prep II - V: 157 & Q: 162 (took a day before the exam) Actual GRE - V: 150 & Q: 168 Hours Studied - 15 hours
  6. Hello everyone, I am in my second to last semester in my undergraduate degree and I am currently making final decisions in programs. I wanted to ask for some advices on if some of my choices would be waste of application fee. Ethnicity: International (Asian) Male Education: Big 10 institution, Statistics Major. (Cumulative GPA: 3.28, Major GPA: 3.50), I also went to a semester exchange to a lesser known state university twice. Some Relevant Courses: * after the course name indicates a course transferred from a community college. ** after the course name indicates a course transferred from the lesser known state university from the exchange. Freshman: Calculus I* (A-), Calculus II (A-), Algebra based intro to stats (A) Sophomore: Lin Alg & Diff Eq (D -> B-, retaken), Multivariable Calculus** (B+), Calc Based Intro to Prob&Stats (A-) Junior: Intro to Proofs (B+), Probability Theory (B-), Advanced Linear Algebra** (A), Data Analysis** (A), Intro to C++ (A) Senior Semester 1: Real Analysis I (Rudin), Nonparametrics, Regression Analysis. Senior Semester 2: Real Analysis II, Experiment Design, Senior Project, Mathematical Stats. Research Experience I did an independent study concerning some experiment and statistical hypothesis tests. Nothing theoretical or deep. Internship Unpaid internship from a nonprofit organization. What I did was basically get all the raw data in Excel and produce statistical analysis reports. GRE I took it after sophomore year just for a heck of it and got murdered at the verbal section. V: 149 (40%) Q: 165 (91%) AWA: 3.0 (14%) I am retaking GRE in three weeks. I am reasonably aiming for 50th percentile (151) Verbal and status quo or higher on Quant. LOR 1: Independent study adviser and Data Analysis class professor (He should be able to describe my research, statistical, and R programming ability). 2: Advanced Linear Algebra professor (He should be able to describe my mathematical and C++ programming ability) 3: Academic adviser. All of them should be able to write be 'favorable' letters (I specifically asked them if they would be comfortable). Places in mind I posted a profile eval request earlier this year and cyberwulf suggested schools with 30+ ranks. I chose these schools based on their USNWR ranking and my research and geographical interests. I am interested in nonparametrics and application to another disciplines and plan on applying 6-7 programs. UC Davis (PhD) Colorado State (PhD) Oregon State (MS) Arizona State (PhD) University of British Columbia (MSc) UC Santa Barbara (PhD) UC Santa Cruz (PhD) UC San Diego (PhD) University of New Mexico (PhD) University of Wyoming (PhD) Do you think any of these schools are unreasonable reach? I don't want to spend around $100 just to get rejected. I would greatly appreciate your advices and thank you very much for your time in advance.
  7. Hi, I am an international student studying in the US applying to Statistics PhD/MS programs in US and Canada. I can see all of the institutions that I am planning on applying state that they exempt the TOEFL requirement for international applicants who received or will receive a bachelor's degree in English speaking countries. I was wondering if it is general tendency to offer TAships to the international applicants with a degree from the US? Or should I take the TOEFL test and submit it if I want to get a TA position? Thank you.
  8. Thank you very much for the reply, cyberwulf. I should have mentioned that I am interested in Statistics program. At best of my knowledge, masters programs are generally not funded, and I don't think I will be able to afford to pay tuition any more after graduation. In that case, (assuming that my qualification stays about the same upon graduation) should I have somewhat decent places such as top 30+? Thank you again.
  9. Hello everyone, I just finished my junior year and am interested in going to graduate school. As my academic record is rather 'colorful', I wanted to ask for some advices and what schools that I should reasonably aim to apply. Ethnicity: International (Asian) Male Education: Big 10 institution, Statistics Major. (Cumulative GPA: 3.28, Major GPA: 3.50), I also went to a semester exchange to a lesser known state university twice (I went there due to personal and financial reasons). Some Relevant Courses: * after the course name indicates a course transferred from a community college. ** after the course name indicates a course transferred from the lesser known state university from the exchange. Freshman: Calculus I* (A-), Calculus II (A-), Algebra based intro to stats (A) Sophomore: Lin Alg & Diff Eq (D, then I retook it and got a B-), Multivariable Calculus** (B+), Calc Based Intro to Prob&Stats (A-) Junior: Introduction to Proofs (B+), Probability Theory (B-), Advanced Linear Algebra** (A, it was very theory oriented), Data Analysis** (A, basic statistical computing course with some linear regression and anova), Intro to C++ (A) Senior: I plan to take Analysis (Rudin) I, Stochastic process, Nonparametric Stats, and Regression analysis courses next semester. For my final semester, I would probably take Analysis (Rudin) II, Experiment Design, Senior Project, Mathematical Statistics courses. I really need to get A's in all of these courses, don't I? Research Experience During exchange, I did some experiment and did lots of statistical tests. Nothing theoretical or deep. I got an A for the independent study for it though. I will try to get it published but I will see about that. I will also have my senior paper in my last semester (it's required). Internship I'm doing an unpaid internship from a nonprofit organization. What I do is basically get all the raw data they have from their program and produce a quality Statistical analysis report. (Thankfully, they didn't ask for my GPA when applying.) GRE I took it after sophomore year just for a heck of it and got murdered at the verbal section. V: 149 (40%) Q: 165 (91%) AWA: 3.0 (14%) I will definitely retake this to get at least a moderate verbal and writing along with perfect quant score. Also, I think other Asians (Chinese, Korean, etc.) set the bar for GRE too high which I am really not pleased with. LOR I think my advisor for the independent study from an exchange school can give me a fairly good letter, he also taught the data analysis course in which I got an A. Also, I think I can ask my degree advisor in my home university can give me a mediocre letter. I will need to impress at least one (hopefully 2) professors in my senior year. Places in mind I would really love to go to the U of Washington. But realistically, I would be happy to go anywhere west coast and Rockies (California, Colorado, Oregon, etc.). I know that I don't have a stellar academic records. After freshman year, I kind of stopped caring too much and practically screwed up my 3 semesters. During exchange this Spring, I learned a lot and (hopefully) got my head straight (I got a straight A this semester which I never did after freshman year, so I hope it's a good sign). Just one concern is that I did everything worth mentioning during my exchange, NOT in my home university. I really hope that will not be a big problem. I would greatly appreciate your advices and some recommendations of places that I can realistically aim for. Thank you very much for your time in advance.
